Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Yankees 2 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles closed out their season by beating the playoff-bound Yankees, 5-2. The Birds tallied three times in the third inning on consecutive doubles by Rich Dauer and Ken Singleton, followed by a two-run homer by Eddie Murray. Al Bumbry drilled a run-scoring two-bagger in the fourth and Doug DeCinces led off the sixth with a circuit clout.

White Sox 13, Twins 12 at Chicago (day game):
Jerry Hairston, who clouted a grand slam in the eighth inning, capped a four-run ninth with a run-scoring single to lift the White Sox to a wild 13-12 victory over the Twins. The Sox were behind, 12-9, with two out and nobody on base in the bottom of the ninth when Mike Squires and pinch-hitter Bob Molinaro singled. Doug Corbett relieved John Verhoeven on the hill for the Twins and was greeted by Jerry Turner's RBI pinch-single. A walk to Leo Sutherland loaded the bases and Tony Bernazard singled to tie the score. Hairston then singled down the right field line for his sixth RBI of the game.

Red Sox 6, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Dwight Evans belted two homers and scored three times to spark the Red Sox to a 6-2 decision over the Indians. Evans doubled in the first inning and scored on a single by Jim Rice. He smacked a solo homer in the third and added his 22nd round-tripper and 71st RBI in the eighth.

A's 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (day game):
A homer by Dave McKay snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning to give the A's a 4-3 victory over the Royals and force Kansas City into overtime in search of the second-half championship of the A.L. West. The Royals had to travel to Cleveland to make up a doubleheader with the Indians the next day. K.C. needed one victory in Cleveland to clinch the second-half title and secure two home games against the A's in the divisional playoff.

Tigers 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Milt Wilcox pitched the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Detroit broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth. The Tigers loaded the bases on a single by Lynn Jones, error by Milwaukee pitcher Jerry Augustine, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk. Kirk Gibson then delivered a single to score Darrell Brown, pinch-running for Jones.

Mariners 2, Blue Jays 0 at Seattle (day game):
Solo homers by Bud Bulling and Tom Paciorek in the sixth inning gave the Mariners a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. Floyd Bannister, who pitched the first seven frames, and Shane Rawley combined to scatter six hits for the shutout.

Angels 9, Rangers 2 at Texas (day game):
Don Baylor went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs to pace a 15-hit attack that carried the Angels to a 9-2 triumph over the Rangers. California took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Baylor and throwing error by shortstop Mark Wagner, and upped their margin to 4-0 in the second on a two-run single by Rick Burleson. A sacrifice fly by Brian Harper produced a third-inning tally and Baylor delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Reds 3, Braves 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Mario Soto allowed only one hit -- a second-inning single by Chris Chambliss -- in pitching the Reds to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Braves. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Dave Collins, Paul Householder and Dave Concepcion and added a pair in the fourth on a single by George Foster, RBI double by Ray Knight and run-scoring single by Mike O'Berry.

Astros 5, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
In the regular-season finale of two teams slated to meet in the playoffs, the Astros downed the Dodgers, 5-3, Houston's first win at Dodger Stadium after five straight losses. The score was 3-3 when Dickie Thon began the ninth inning with a double, reached second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Gary Woods, who was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. Scott Loucks then singled and tallied on a double by Dave Roberts.

Mets 2, Expos 1 at New York (day game):
Mets' Manager Joe Torre was given the pink slip earlier in the day, but remained on the scene for one final game and his club gave him a 2-1 victory over the Expos. Pete Falcone went the route on a seven-hitter. The Mets scored in the second inning on an RBI double by Rusty Staub and picked up an insurance marker in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Ron Gardenhire.

Phillies 2, Cubs 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies closed out their regular season by beating the Cubs, 2-1. Del Unser opened the bottom of the third inning with a walk and Lonnie Smith followed with a ground-rule double, tying him with Houston's Art Howe for the longest batting streak in the N.L. this season -- 23 games.

Cardinals 4, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (day game):
