With three pitchers combining on a three-hitter, the Royals blanked the Indians, 9-0, to clinch the second-half title in the A.L. West. The game was necessitated to determine the extent of Oakland's home-field advantage in the divisional playoff. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called off. K.C. scored twice in the second inning on an RBI single by John Wathan and a fielder's choice.
