Today's scores and summaries:
Astros 3, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
Alan Ashby's two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Astros to a 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers in the opening game of the N.L. West playoff series. The score was 1-1 when Craig Reynolds stroked a two-out pinch-single and Ashby belted a drive into the right field seats. The Astros scored their first run in the sixth on a two-out single by Terry Puhl, a walk to Phil Garner and a bloop single to center by Tony Scott. Nolan Ryan allowed only three Dodgers to reach base: Ken Landreaux on a first-inning single, Rick Monday on a second-inning walk and Steve Garvey on a seventh-inning homer.
A's 4, Royals 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Homers by Wayne Gross and Dwayne Murphy backed the four-hit pitching of Mike Norris as the A's began the A.L. West playoffs with a 4-0 blanking of the Royals. With one out in the fourth inning, Murphy walked and reached second on a groundout by Keith Drumright. When Tony Armas hit a grounder to third base, George Brett's errant throw permitted Armas to reach first. Gross followed with a clout over the right field fence. Murphy added a solo round-tripper in the eighth.
