Today's scores and summaries:

Astros 1, Dodgers 0 at Houston (day game):
Pushing across a run in the 11th inning, the Astros edged the Dodgers, 1-0, to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five divisional series. After the teams battled through 10½ scoreless frames, Phil Garner led off the bottom of the 11th with a single and went to third on a single by Tony Scott. Terry Forster replaced Dave Stewart on the hill for Los Angeles and retired Jose Cruz on a fly to short left field. Tom Niedenfuer then assumed the pitching chores and issued an intentional walk to Cesar Cedeno to load the bases. Art Howe struck out but Denny Walling, pinch-hitting for Dickie Thon, singled into the gap in deep right-center to plate Garner and end the game.

Expos 3, Phillies 1 at Montreal (day game):
Pounding Steve Carlton for seven hits in six innings, the Expos prevailed over the Phillies, 3-1, in the first game of the N.L. East Division Playoff Series. Montreal tallied once in the first inning. Warren Cromartie led off with a single and was forced on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jerry White, who then stole second and scored when Gary Carter laced a two-out double off the left field fence. Keith Moreland tied the score with a leadoff homer in the second, but the Expos took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on doubles by Tim Wallach and Chris Speier. The Expos added an insurance marker in the fourth on a walk to Speier, sacrifice bunt by Steve Rogers and Cromartie's run-scoring double. Outstanding plays by Speier in the fourth and eighth innings helped prevent the Phillies from scoring.

A's 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
Scattering six hits, Steve McCatty hurled the A's to a 2-1 triumph over the Royals, giving Oakland a 2-0 lead in games in the best-of-five Divisional Series. The game was tied, 1-1, when Dwayne Murphy opened the eighth inning with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Cliff Johnson. Tony Armas then drilled a hard shot through the legs of K.C. third baseman George Brett for a double that scored Murphy. Armas drove in the first run in the first inning with a double on a short hit to right field. The two-bagger followed a single by Murphy and a double by Johnson. Johnson had to hold up until Armas' ball fell and only got as far as third base.

Yankees 5, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Getting superb relief pitching from Ron Davis and Rich Gossage, the Yankees edged the Brewers, 5-3, in the first game of the A.L. East Division Series. New York scored four runs in the fourth inning on a one-out walk to Reggie Jackson followed by a two-run homer by Oscar Gamble, Bob Watson's single, an infield hit by Larry Milbourne and Rick Cerone's two-run double. A pair of Milwaukee errors gave the Yanks another run in the ninth.
