Today's scores and summaries:
Expos 3, Phillies 1 at Montreal (night game):
Chris Speier's run-scoring single in the second inning and a two-run homer by Gary Carter in the third carried the Expos to a 3-1 triumph over the Phillies for a 2-0 lead in the N.L. East Division Series. Bill Gullickson blanked the Phils on three hits through the first seven innings before needing relief help from Jeff Reardon, who earned his second save in as many days.
Yankees 3, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Yankees' pitching troika of Dave Righetti, Ron Davis and Rich Gossage combined for 14 strikeouts and limited Milwaukee batters to seven hits in blanking the Brewers, 3-0, for a 2-0 lead in the A.L. East Division Series. Lou Piniella provided a home run in the fourth inning and Reggie Jackson connected for the circuit with a man on base in the ninth. Righetti fanned 10 batters in six innings before giving way to Davis at the start of the seventh. Trying to hold a 1-0 lead, Davis loaded the bases but was bailed out of trouble by Gossage, who earned his second save in less than 24 hours.
