Today's scores and summaries:

Dodgers 6, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
A two-run homer by Steve Garvey capped a three-run outburst in the first inning that sent the Dodgers on their way to a 6-1 triumph over the Astros, keeping L.A. alive in the N.L. West Division Series. Davey Lopes opened the Dodgers' first with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Ken Landreaux and scored on a double by Dusty Baker. Garvey then followed with his round-tripper. Houston's only marker came in the third frame on a solo homer by Art Howe. The Dodgers wrapped up the contest with three runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Bill Russell, sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Reggie Smith and run-scoring single by Landreaux.

Phillies 6, Expos 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
Collecting 13 hits and aided by four Montreal errors, the Phillies staved off elimination in the N.L. East Division Series by defeating the Expos, 6-2. The game's result left Montreal ahead, 2-1 in games in the best-of-five set. After the Expos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Chris Speier, the Phils tallied twice in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring single by Gary Matthews and a throwing error by center fielder Andre Dawson. They picked up another pair in the sixth on an RBI pinch-single by George Vukovich and Pete Rose's run-scoring hit. Mike Schmidt doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored when reliever Elias Sosa made a wild throw on an infield hit by Matthews. Larry Bowa then singled home Matthews with the Phillies' final run.

A's 4, Royals 1 at Oakland (night game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the A's won the A.L. West Division championship with a 4-1 victory over the Royals. Oakland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Rickey Henderson walked, stole second and tallied on an infield single by Tony Armas. The A's boosted their margin to 2-0 in the third with the aid of three Royals' errors. An RBI infield out by Amos Otis gave the Royals a fourth-inning run, but in the bottom of the frame Dave McKay belted a solo homer, Henderson followed with a single and Dwayne Murphy with a run-scoring double to make it 4-1.

Brewers 5, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
The Brewers employed the lusty hitting of Ted Simmons and Paul Molitor to defeat the Yankees, 5-3, and fight off elimination in the A.L. East Division Series. With the Brewers trailing, 1-0, going into the seventh inning, Cecil Cooper led off with a single. Play was then interrupted when a fan, angered by a controversial call in the previous inning, leaped onto the field and assaulted third base umpire Mike Reilly. After order was restored, Ted Simmons hit a homer to put Milwaukee ahead, 2-1. The Brewers added another run later in the inning on an RBI single by Sal Bando, but the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the frame on run-scoring singles by Rick Cerone and Willie Randolph. Paul Molitor broke the 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth with a solo homer and Simmons provided insurance with an RBI double.
