Dodgers 7, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
A two-run homer by Steve Garvey was the key blow as the Dodgers downed the Expos, 7-1, to even the N.L. Championship Series at two games apiece. Garvey's blast off Bill Gullickson broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning and followed a leadoff single by Dusty Baker. The Dodgers then broke the game open in the ninth, sending 10 men to the plate with Baker stroking a two-run single and Ron Cey and pinch-hitter Reggie Smith delivering RBI singles. The Dodgers' first run came in the third inning when Baker doubled home Bill Russell, who had reached first safely on a two-out throwing error by third baseman Larry Parrish. Montreal's tally came in the fourth when Gary Carter reached first on an error by third baseman Cey, advanced to second on a walk to Jerry White and came home on a single by Warren Cromartie. The Expos had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Bob Welch relieved starter Burt Hooton and ended that threat.
