Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 13, Royals 5 at Baltimore (day game):
Blasting four homers, including a bases-loaded clout by Eddie Murray, the Orioles thrashed the Royals, 13-5, before 52,034, the largest regular-season turnout in Baltimore history. The Birds' Cal Ripken drilled a two-run homer in the second inning. Murray's swat came in the third inning, following singles by Rick Dempsey and Dan Ford and a K.C. error. Gary Roenicke smashed a solo blast later in that frame. A three-run homer by Ford capped the Orioles' six-run rally in the seventh inning.

Cubs 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Bump Wills and Keith Moreland, off-season acquisitions, triggered the Cubs to a 3-2 opening-day triumph over the Reds in a game called after eight innings because of rain. Wills smashed the second pitch of the game over the right field fence. Moreland homered leading off the second inning and delivered a run-scoring single in the eighth. Starter and winner Doug Bird yielded one run and five hits in seven innings. The game was played in miserable weather, with the game-time temperature at 42 degrees, and there were delays of 46 and 51 minutes before the contest was called.
