Today's scores and summaries:
Mariners 11, Twins 7 at Minnesota (night game):
Driving in five runs with a homer, double, single and sacrifice fly, Jim Maler paced the Mariners to an 11-7 season-opening triumph over the Twins as 52,279 -- the largest crowd ever to watch a Minnesota baseball game -- turned out for the first regular-season contest in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Mariners broke a 4-4- tie in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte and took a 6-4 margin in the sixth on Maler's sacrifice fly. Twins rookie third baseman Gary Gaetti had a pair of homers, a triple and a single and drove across four runs.
A's 3, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th inning plated the winning run as the A's shaded the Angels, 3-2, in the season opener for both teams. The score was 2-2 when Dwayne Murphy led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk and, two outs later, reached third on Wayne Gross' single. After Jim Spencer was walked intentionally, Davey Lopes walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home the decisive tally. Winning pitcher Jeff Jones hurled 3 1/3 innings in relief and gave up just one hit. The A's had deadlocked the contest in the sixth on Murphy's two-run homer.
Cardinals 14, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A three-run homer by Darrell Porter highlighted a five-run first inning that propelled the Cardinals to a 14-3 rout of the Astros in the season opener for both teams. Porter's blast off Nolan Ryan followed a hit batsman and a base on balls. The Redbirds added two more markers later in the frame on Steve Braun's run-scoring single and an RBI groundout by Ozzie Smith. Keith Hernandez collected a single, two doubles and 3 RBI. Jim Kaat, who relieved for the Cards in the ninth inning, set a major league record for pitchers by appearing in a big league game for the 24th consecutive season.
Dodgers 4, Giants 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
Dusty Baker's single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored the winning run as the Dodgers began the defense of their world championship by edging the Giants, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Bill Russell opened the L.A. ninth with a double and advanced to third on a single by Steve Sax. After an intentional walk to Ron Roenicke loaded the bases, Greg Minton replaced Gary Lavelle on the mound for the Giants and yielded the winning hit to Baker. The Giants had tied the game in the sixth on RBI singles by Jeff Leonard and Milt May.
Braves 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Yielding just two hits, Rick Mahler pitched the Braves to a 1-0 opening-game conquest of the Padres. The shutout was the first of Mahler's major league career and only his second complete game in 15 starts. The lone run came in the fifth inning when Brett Butler drew a one-out walk and raced home on a hit-and-run double by Glenn Hubbard.
