Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 7, Mariners 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the fourth inning, the Twins recorded their first victory of the season, beating the Mariners, 7-5. The Twins loaded the bases in the fourth on walks to Roy Smalley and Kent Hrbek and a single by Randy Johnson. An infield single by Gary Ward plated Smalley, and Hrbek registered when third baseman Manny Castillo booted Sal Butera's grounder. Jim Eisenreich then lined a two-run single to right -- his first major league hit -- and Butera scored the last run of the inning on a fielder's choice. Hrbek clouted a solo homer in the fifth.

Angels 7, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Scattering four hits, Geoff Zahn recorded the first A.L. shutout of the season in pitching the Angels to a 7-0 blanking of the A's, California's first victory of the campaign. A walk to Rick Burleson, single by Fred Lynn, double by Rod Carew and grounder by Reggie Jackson produced two runs in the first inning, and the score became 4-0 in the third on doubles by Lynn and Carew and a sacrifice fly by Doug DeCinces. Brian Downing homered leading off the sixth and delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Reds 6, Cubs 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Driving in two runs with a homer and a triple, rookie outfielder Paul Householder led the Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs. Householder cracked a bases-empty blast in the fourth inning to give the Reds a 1-0 lead and then drilled a run-scoring triple in the sixth to make the margin 2-0. The Reds put the game out of reach in the seventh on an RBI single by Dave Concepcion and a run-scoring double by Cesar Cedeno.

Astros 3, Cardinals 2 at Houston (night game):
A two-run double by Luis Pujols in the sixth inning was the key hit as the Astros shaded the Cardinals, 3-2. Houston took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by Tony Scott and boosted their lead to 3-0 in the sixth when Art Howe drew a two-out walk, Scott followed with a single and Pujols lined his two-bagger into the left field corner. Joe Niekro pitched until Darrell Porter blasted a solo homer with one out in the ninth. Joe Sambito relieved and retired the next two batters to earn the save.

Dodgers 9, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Lashing out 14 hits and aided by San Francisco misplays, the Dodgers enjoyed a 9-2 romp over the Giants. L.A. broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run outburst in the third inning on a two-run single by Bill Russell, an error by right fielder Jack Clark that permitted two more runs to score, and a run-scoring single by Ken Landreaux. Darrell Evans committed two errors in the fifth to allow the Dodgers to score their last two tallies.

Braves 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (day game):
Dale Murphy collected a single, double, homer and two RBIs to spark the Braves to a 6-4 decision over the Padres. The Braves scored three runs in the third inning on run-scoring singles by Brett Butler and Claudell Washington and Murphy's RBI two-bagger. Murphy drilled a solo round-tripper in the sixth and Atlanta added singletons in the seventh and ninth on a groundout by Glenn Hubbard and a single by Butler. Bob Walk pitched seven innings to notch the victory.
