Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 4, Mariners 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Rookie Gary Gaetti continued his sensational hitting, collecting a homer, single and two RBIs as the Twins posted a 4-2 victory over the Mariners. Gaetti's round-tripper led off the bottom of the second inning and he stroked a run-scoring single in the seventh. Jesus Vega also drove in two runs with RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

Angels 8, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
Doug DeCinces led off the 16th inning with his second home run of the game and the Angels added three insurance runs to climax an 8-6 marathon victory over the A's in the longest game ever played by either club -- 5 hours, 31 minutes. DeCinces clubbed a 1-1 pitch off reliever Jeff Jones over the left field fence to break a 4-4 tie. Tim Foli and Joe Ferguson had one-out singles and Rick Burleson drew a walk. An errant throw by catcher Bob Kearney, sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn and single by Rod Carew produced the three additional California runs. DeCinces also homered in the fourth.

Astros 1, Cardinals 0 at Houston (night game):
Bob Knepper and Dave Smith combined on a four-hit shutout as the Astros outlasted the Cardinals, 1-0. The only run Joaquin Andujar permitted his former Houston teammates was unearned in the eighth inning. Art Howe stroked an inning-opening double to right-center and was sacrificed to third. With the infield drawn in for a play at the plate, pinch-hitter Denny Walling grounded to St. Louis second baseman Tommy Herr, who couldn't find the handle on the routine chance as pinch-runner Dickie Thon crossed the plate with the decisive tally.

Mets 7, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
Bob Bailor cracked two doubles and a single and drove in three runs to trigger the Mets to a 7-2 triumph in the season's opener for both teams. New York touched Steve Carlton for two runs in their first turn at bat on doubles by Bailor and George Foster and a throwing error by Manny Trillo. Bailor drilled a run-scoring double in the fifth frame and delivered a two-run single during a four-run seventh. It was the Mets' eighth straight opening day victory. The Phillies' loss spoiled the managerial debut of Pat Corrales. The game was played 41-degree temperatures and winds which gusted up to 28 mph. The original opening date had been postponed twice because of cold weather.
