Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 4, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A first-inning gramd slam by Amos Otis lifted the Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in the season-opening game for Detroit. Otis' swat was set up by singles by Tom Poquette and John Wathan and an intentional walk to Willie Aikens after George Brett advanced the runners with a flyout. Larry Gura scattered six hits in his route-going performance.

Twins 2, Angels 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Home runs by Jesus Vega and Kent Hrbek and four-hit hurling by Albert Williams enabled the Twins to edge to Angels, 2-1. Vega's blast led off the bottom of the third inning and Hrbek's clout -- a 420-foot shot into the second deck in right field -- came leading off the seventh frame and broke a 1-1 tie.

A's 5, Mariners 3 at Oakland (night game):
Taking advantage of Gaylord Perry's wildness, the A's scored five runs in the fifth inning to down the Mariners, 5-3. Dave McKay began the bottom of the fifth by reaching safely when catcher Jim Essian was unable to handle a wild third strike by Perry. Jim Spencer then walked and Jeff Newman followed with an RBI double. After an infield single by Rob Picciolo loaded the bases, Perry uncorked two wild pitches, allowing Spencer and Newman to score. An RBI groundout by Dwayne Murphy and RBI single by Tony Armas completed Oakland's scoring.

Brewers 15, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
Sending 11 batters to the plate and tallying six runs in their first turn at bat, the Brewers went on to a 15-4 lambasting of the Blue Jays. The scoring began with a two-run double by Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie followed with a two-run homer. Later in the frame, Mark Brouhard delivered an RBI single and Paul Molitor stroked a sacrifice fly. Two-run doubles by Robin Yount and Cooper keyed a seven-run outburst in the sixth stanza.

Braves 6, Astros 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run homer by Dale Murphy highlighted a five-run first inning that triggered the Braves to a 6-2 home-opening triumph over the Astros. It was Atlanta's third consecutive victory. The first run came on an errant pickoff throw by Astros' catcher Alan Ashby and the second tallied on a sacrifice fly by Bob Horner which was dropped by center fielder Tony Scott. Murphy's blast accounted for two more and Rafael Ramirez climaxed the outburst by delivering an RBI single following a two-bagger by Bruce Benedict.

Cubs 5, Mets 0 at Chicago (day game):
After eight years in the American League, Fergie Jenkins made his triumphant return to Wrigley Field, combining with Lee Smith on a six-hitter as the Cubs won their home opener, 5-0, over the Mets. The Cubs scored twice in the fourth inning when Larry Bowa stroked a leadoff single and Bill Buckner followed with a homer deep into the right field bleachers. Leon Durham delivered an RBI single in the sixth and Keith Moreland cracked a two-run single in the eighth. The game was played in 34-degree temperature.

Reds 7, Giants 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Firing a four-hitter, Frank Pastore pitched the Reds to a 7-0 whitewashing of the Giants, San Francisco's third straight loss. The Reds registered two runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Johnny Bench and a run-scoring infield out by Paul Householder. Alex Trevino cracked a two-run double in the fourth frame and added another RBI in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk.

Padres 7, Dodgers 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Padres recorded their first victory of the season with a 7-4 decision over the Dodgers. The game was tied, 4-4, when Ruppert Jones drew a two-out walk in the seventh inning and raced home on a double by Sixto Lezcano. San Diego added a run in the eighth on a fielder's choice grounder and another in the ninth on an RBI single by Terry Kennedy. Floyd Chiffer, who relieved in the sixth inning, was credited with his first major league victory.

Expos 2, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Three-hit pitching by Steve Rogers enabled the Expos to open their season with a 2-0 blanking of the Phillies. The Expos scored in the first inning on a solo homer by Andre Dawson and added another marker in the fourth when Warren Cromartie singled, took third on a double by Tim Wallach and came in on a sacrifice fly by Chris Speier.
