Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 2, Orioles 0 (day game) / Orioles 5, Red Sox 3 at Baltimore (day game):
The Red Sox opened their 1982 campaign by splitting a doubleheader with the Orioles, capturing the lidlifter, 2-0, and dropping the nightcap, 5-3. Dennis Eckersley scattered six singles in a route-going performance in the first game as the Bosox scored on a two-out, two-run single by Jim Rice in the third inning. In the second contest, Dennis Martinez pitched 7 2/3 innings of five-hit ball. Eddie Murray doubled home a run in the first inning, delivered an RBI groundout in the third and doubled home another run in the sixth. Carl Yastrzemski belted his 427th career homer in the first inning with a mate aboard.

Rangers 8, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Veteran knuckleballer Charlie Hough pitched his fifth complete game in 24 major league starts and Buddy Bell swatted two homers as the Rangers downed the Indians, 8-3, in the season's opener for both clubs. Bell's circuit clouts were solo shots in the third and fifth innings. George Wright drove in three runs with a bases-empty homer in the third, RBI single in the fourth and run-scoring two-bagger in the sixth.

Royals 5, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
With Dennis Leonard, Grant Jackson and Dan Quisenberry combining for a one-hitter, the Royals defeated the Tigers, 5-2. K.C. scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by George Brett, in the third inning on a run-scoring grounder by John Wathan, and twice in the fourth on RBI groundouts by Hal McRae and Tom Poquette.

Angels 8, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Reliever Steve Renko pitched two-hit ball over the last five innings as the Angels flew past the Twins, 8-1. The Angels took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Bobby Clark and run-scoring double by Rick Burleson. They iced the contest with a four-run outburst in the fifth frame, the key blow being a two-run single by Juan Beniquez.

Blue Jays 3, Brewers 2 at Toronto (day game):
Barry Bonnell's fifth straight hit of the game lifted the Blue Jays to a 10-inning, 3-2 triumph over the Brewers, Toronto's first victory of the season. The score was 2-2 when Damaso Garcia opened the bottom of the 10th with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch. Wayne Nordhagen then walked and, one out later, Bonnell jumped on reliever Fingers' first serve for a line single to left to plate the winning run.

Braves 8, Astros 6 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves rolled to their fourth straight victory, outlasting the Astros, 8-6. Atlanta took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Claudell Washington and sacrifice fly by Dale Murphy and went ahead, 5-0, in the second when Brett Butler rapped a two-run single, stole second and raced home on a single by Glenn Hubbard. Hubbard also delivered a run-scoring double in the fourth.

Mets 9, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
Pat Zachry flirted with a no-hitter for 7 2/3 innings and Dave Kingman drove in five runs to pace the Mets to a 9-5 decision over the Cubs. The first hit off the New York righthander was a run-scoring pinch-single by Bob Molinaro with two out in the eighth. The Cubs went on to score three more runs in that frame and then kayoed Zachry in the ninth. Kingman drilled a three-run homer in the fourth frame.

Giants 7, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
A two-run pinch-single by Joe Morgan in the 10th inning lifted the Giants to a 7-5 triumph over the Reds, San Francisco's first victory of the season. The score was 5-5 when Reggie Smith opened the 10th with a single and Darrell Evans walked. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt and, after Milt May was intentionally passed, Morgan delivered the game-winning blow.

Dodgers 6, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Fernando Valenzuela, showing no ill effects from his holdout, pitched six scoreless frames as the Dodgers blanked the Padres, 6-0. Dusty Baker drilled a solo homer in the first inning and Los Angeles tallied three times in the fourth on run-scoring doubles by Bill Russell and Steve Sax sandwiched between an RBI groundout by Valenzuela.

Expos 11, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Pounding out 16 hits, the Expos handed the winless Phillies their third straight setback, 11-3. The Expos began the scoring on an RBI single by Warren Cromartie in the second inning and Al Oliver made it 4-0 with a three-run homer in the third.

Pirates 11, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (day game):
St. Louis reliever Mark Littell was the goat of the game as the Pirates spoiled the Cardinals' home opener by beating the Redbirds, 11-7. Littell took over the pitching chores at the start of the seventh inning with the score tied, 7-7, and promptly gave up a double to Johnny Ray. Dale Berra laid down a sacrifice bunt and Littell, attempting to get the runner at third, threw the ball away. Ray scored on the play and Berra reached third, from where he came home on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Jason Thompson off Doug Bair produced the third run of the inning after Littell walked the bases loaded.
