Red Sox 6, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (day game):
Notching his first major leage shutout, John Tudor pitched the Red Sox past the Orioles, 6-0. Boston scored two runs in the first inning on singles by Dwight Evans and Glenn Hoffman, a walk to Jim Rice and RBI groundouts by Carl Yastrzemski and Carney Lansford.

Indians 13, Rangers 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Len Barker breezed to victory as the Indians pounded the Rangers, 13-1. The Tribe scored in the third inning on a two-run single by Toby Harrah and tallied four times in the fourth on an RBI triple by Jack Perconte, run-scoring single by Jerry Dybzinski, Harrah's single and a wild pitch. Harrah picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a fifth-inning single.

Tigers 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (day game):
The Tigers spoiled Vida's Blue's return to the American League by edging the Royals, 2-1, behind the combined four-hit hurling of Dave Rozema and Kevin Saucier. The score was 0-0 when Enos Cabell and Kirk Gibson opened the fourth inning with consecutive doubles. Gibson reached third when right fielder Jerry Martin misplayed the ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Larry Herndon. The Royals' run came on George Brett's homer in the sixth.

Twins 3, Angels 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Randy Johnson hit his first major league homer in the fifth and Pete Redfern tossed a seven-hitter to lead the Twins to a 3-1 decision over the Angels. Johnson's two-bagger broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh. Minnesota added another marker in the same frame on Gary Ward's sacrifice fly.

[DH] White Sox 7, Yankees 6 (day game) / White Sox 2, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
In the opening games of the season for both teams, the White Sox swept a twin bill from the Yankees, 7-6 in 12 innings in the first game, and 2-0 behind the combined five-hit pitching of Britt Burns and Salome Barojas in the nightcap. The lidlifter was deadlocked at 6-6 when Bill Almon began the 12th with a 425-foot triple to left-center. He scored on a single by Ron LeFlore through the drawn-in infield. In the second game, the Pale Hose scored both their runs in the sixth inning. Almon stroked a one-out single and, one out later, tallied on a double by Bernazard, who came in on a single by Steve Kemp.

[DH] Mariners 6, A's 3 (day game) / A's 3, Mariners 1 at Oakland (night game):
The Mariners and A's split a doubleheader, the Mariners winning the opener, 6-3 in 16 innings, and the A's taking the second contest, 3-1, as Rick Langford went the route despite giving up 11 hits and walking two. The first game was tied, 3-3, when the Mariners loaded the bases in the top of the 16th on walks to Richie Zisk and Joe Simpson and a single by Jim Maler. Jim Essian then cleared the sacks with a two-bagger to left-center. Dwayne Murphy broke out of an 0-for-23 slump with a double to key the A's victory in the second game. His two-bagger in the third inning scored Fred Stanley and sent Rickey Henderson to third, from where he came in on a wild pitch.

Brewers 14, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
Ben Oglivie delivered a two-run single to highlight a seven-run first inning and belted a two-run homer in the ninth to pace the Brewers to a 14-5 rout of the Blue Jays. The Brewers collected eight hits in their first turn at bat and were helped by two Toronto errors. Bob McClure, pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief, was credited with the victory.

Braves 5, Astros 0 at Atlanta (day game):
Rick Mahler pitched his second consecutive shutout as the Braves recorded their fifth straight triumph, beating the Astros, 5-0. The Braves scored three runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Bob Horner, Dale Murphy's two-run homer and an RBI single by Rafael Ramirez. Horner belted a solo round-tripper in the eighth, his first hit of the year after 14 at-bats.

Mets 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
A four-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Mets to a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. New York was behind, 3-0, when George Foster began the sixth with a home run. The Mets then got a one-out double by Joel Youngblood, an infield single by Ron Hodges, RBI single by Wally Backman, Ron Gardenhire's RBI double and Mookie Wilson's run-scoring single. Gardenhire delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Keith Moreland hit a two-run homer for the Cubs and Jerry Morales had a solo clout in the second.

Giants 6, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
Benefiting from nine walks and two wild pitches, the Giants defeated the Reds, 6-1. Reggie Smith and Jeff Leonard delivered run-scoring singles in the first inning and Jack Clark got an RBI groundout in the fourth. The Giants scored three runs in the sixth on four walks, a single by Joe Morgan, two wild pitches and Leonard's sacrifice fly.

Phillies 1, Expos 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies posted their first victory of the season, defeating the Expos, 1-0, behind a three-hitter by Mike Krukow. The only run came in the eighth inning. Ivan DeJesus stroked a leadoff single, stole second and stayed there as Tim Wallach threw wildly after fielding Gary Matthews' grounder. Mike Schmidt walked to load the bases and, after Dick Davis popped out, Garry Maddox hit a sacrifice fly.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 6 at St. Louis (day game):
Rallying with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals shaded the Pirates, 7-6. The Bucs had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth on doubles by Willie Stargell and Omar Moreno. After the first two Redbirds were retired in the bottom of the frame, pinch-hitter Orlando Sanchez walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Gene Roof, who raced home on Julio Gonzalez' triple. After a walk to Ozzie Smith, Dane Iorg singled home the decisive run.
