White Sox 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
Tom Paciorek snapped a 0-0 tie with a single in the sixth inning and scored on a double by Carlton Fisk, leading the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox in Boston's home opener. Steve Kemp led off the sixth with a two-bagger, moved to third on a fly and came in on Paciorek's single. After Harold Baines struck out, Fisk lined a double to left-center. The Pale Hose tallied their final run in the seventh on a double by Tony Bernazard. The Bosox rallied in the last of the ninth but Salome Barojas came on to get the final out of the game with a runner on third.

Yankees 10, Rangers 7 at Texas (night game):
Collecting 14 hits, the Yankees posted their first victory of the season, outslugging the Rangers, 10-7, in Texas' home opener. The Bronx Bombers scored four runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Rick Cerone and Willie Randolph's three-run homer. Jerry Mumphrey delivered a two-run single in the fourth and Dave Winfield cracked a leadoff round-tripper in the fifth.

Blue Jays 9, Tigers 5 at Toronto (day game):
A five-run outburst in the fourth inning triggered the Blue Jays' 9-5 triumph over the Tigers. The scoring in the big frame came on a two-run single by Damaso Garcia, Garth Iorg's pinch-double and two-run double by Barry Bonnell. Iorg tripled in a run in the sixth and scored on a single by Alfredo Griffin.

Cubs 5, Mets 4 at Chicago (day game):
Driving in two runs with a single and homer, Keith Moreland keyed the Cubs' 5-4 decision over the Mets. New York took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on George Foster's two-run homer, but the Cubs scored four runs in the fourth on singles by Bill Buckner and Moreland, an error by second baseman Bob Bailor and Dan Briggs' single. Moreland led off the sixth with his round-tripper. Bill Campbell went the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the save.

Braves 6, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The unbeaten Braves ran their victory streak to six, turning back the Reds, 6-1. Bob Horner drilled a solo homer in the second inning and Atlanta broke the game open with a four-run seventh on a leadoff homer by Chris Chambliss, triple by Rafael Ramirez, Bob Walk's single and a sacrifice fly by Claudell Washington. Walk gave up only four hits in 7 2/3 innings to earn the decision.

Astros 2, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
A single by Phil Garner drove home the winning run as the Astros shaded the Dodgers, 2-1, in 11 innings. The score was 1-1 when Jose Cruz opened the bottom of the 11th with a two-bagger. Danny Walling received an intentional walk and both runners moved up on Dickie Thon's sacrifice bunt. Alan Ashby was walked intentionally to load the bases and, after Kiko Garcia struck out, Garner lined a ball over second base to end the game.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 4 at St. Louis (day game):
Two homers by George Hendrick helped power the Cardinals past the Pirates, 5-4. Hendrick led off the fourth inning with a circuit swat to tie the game at 3-3 and two outs later Ozzie Smith singled, stole second and came home on a two-base error by Dale Berra. Hendrick led off the sixth with his second home run.
