Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 8, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
The White Sox, with Steve Kemp hitting a two-run homer in the third inning and Jim Morrison delivering a two-run double in the fourth, spanked the Red Sox, 8-4, for their fifth straight victory.

Angels 3, Mariners 2 at California (night game):
Run-producing singles by Don Baylor and Tim Foli in the fourth inning enabled the Angels to score two runs and edge the Mariners, 3-2, completing the three-game series sweep.

Indians 8, Brewers 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Bert Blyleven, coming back from spring elbow problems, limited the Brewers to two hits over seven innings while pitching the Indians to an 8-1 victory. Bake McBride singled to score two runs in the first inning and Rick Manning contributed a two-run single in the seventh.

Tigers 4, Blue Jays 2 at Detroit (day game):
A hit-and-run single by Lou Whitaker scored Larry Herndon from first base to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and send the Tigers on their way to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

Twins 11, A's 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Kent Hrbek belted his fifth homer of the season, Randy Johnson connected for his third and Butch Wynegar and Jim Eisenreich each hit a round-tripper as the Twins outmuscled the A's, 11-5. Johnson's blast capped a six-run eighth inning that wrapped it up for the Twins.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games and swept the three-game series from the Cubs with a 6-1 victory behind the five-hit pitching of Steve Mura. A sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez plated Tommy Herr, who had tripled, in the first inning. Julio Gonzalez stroked a two-run single in the fourth, and the Redbirds raised their lead to 6-0 on solo homers by Lonnie Smith in the fifth and George Hendrick in the sixth and an RBI single by David Green in the eighth. Mura lost his shutout bid when Keith Moreland belted a two-out homer in the ninth.

Pirates 4, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Omar Moreno singled home Johnny Ray with two out in the top of the ninth, giving the Pirates a 4-3 decision over the Expos. Pittsburgh had rallied for a 3-1 deficit on back-to-back homers by Dave Parker and Jason Thompson in the eighth. Ray led off the ninth with a single against Steve Rogers. Dale Berra laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Ray advanced to third when Al Oliver threw the ball wildly into right field. After Willie Stargell lined into a double play, Moreno greeted Woodie Fryman with a single to center for the winning run.

Phillies 8, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
A fielder's choice grounder by Gary Matthews and a three-run homer by Luis Aguayo highlighted a four-run 13th inning as the Phillies outlasted the Mets, 8-4. New York had tied the contest, 3-3, in the eighth and then matched a run by Philadelphia in the 12th before Manny Trillo led off the 13th with a single and was sacrificed to second. Rookie righthander Charlie Puleo intentionally walked Pete Rose before losing Greg Gross on another base on balls, loading the bases. The Mets then failed to turn a double play on a grounder to third baseman Hubie Brooks as the go-ahead run crossed the plate. Aguayo, who had only two homers in 132 previous major league at-bats, sealed the victory with his circuit clout.

Padres 2, Dodgers 0 at San Diego (night game):
Juan Eichelberger and Gary Lucas combined on a five-hitter to outduel Fernando Valenzuela and lead the Padres to a 2-0 victory over the Dodgers. Garry Templeton broke out of a 2-for-25 slump with a pair of singles, including a run-scoring hit in the first inning following consecutive safeties by Gene Richards and Juan Bonilla to lead off the game. Lucas, who earned his third save, walked with the bases loaded in the seventh for the other San Diego run to send Valenzuela to the showers.
