Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, Orioles 3 at Boston (night game):
A two-run homer by Glenn Hoffman climaxed a three-run fourth inning that triggered the Red Sox to an 8-3 thumping of the Orioles, Baltimore's seventh straight loss. Jim Rice led off the Bosox fourth with a walk and stayed on first as Carney Lansford and Dave Stapleton flied out. Tony Perez then hit a sinking liner to center which Gary Roenicke dived for and appeared to have caught. But umpire Ken Kaiser ruled it a trap and Rice came around from first to score. Hoffman then hit the next pitch for his round-tripper. The Sox put the game away with a four-run outburst in the eighth, the key blow being a two-run double by Dwight Evans.

Yankees 11, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Sending 13 men to the plate in the seventh inning and scoring seven runs, the Yankees drubbed the White Sox, 11-2, handing the Sox their first loss of the season after eight victories. The Bronx Bombers' runs in the seventh came on two-run singles by Rick Cerone and Willie Randolph, a two-out throwing error by Bill Almon and RBI singles by Dave Winfield and Roy Smalley. Lou Piniella and Smalley each had two singles in the big inning. Mike Morgan pitched the first six innings and was credited with the victory despite being forced to leave the game after his arm tightened up in 40-degree weather.

Tigers 8, Royals 0 at Detroit (night game):
Unfurling a brilliant one-hitter, Milt Wilcox hurled the Tigers to an 8-0 whitewashing of the Royals. The lone hit was a single with one out in the second inning as shortstop Alan Trammell fell down trying to field a grounder by Jerry Martin to the left field side of second base. The Tigers scored six runs in the second inning on a two-run double by Glenn Wilson, RBI single by Lou Whitaker, two-run double by Chet Lemon and run-scoring double by Enos Cabell.

A's 4, Twins 3 at Oakland (night game):
A single by Dan Meyer drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 16th inning as the A's outlasted the Twins, 4-3 in a five-hour, three-minute marathon. The score was 3-3 when Davey Lopes led off the A's 16th with a double. Mike Heath was intentionally walked and Fred Stanley walked on four pitches to load the bases. After Rickey Henderson popped out and Dwayne Murphy struck out, Meyer lined a single to right to end the game. The Twins had deadlocked the contest in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk.

Mariners 6, Angels 4 at Seattle (night game):
Gaylord Perry struck out 13 batters in 7 1/3 innings to notch his 298th career victory as the Mariners prevailed over the Angels, 6-4, ending California's seven-game winning streak. The Mariners took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Todd Cruz, run-scoring infield roller by Manny Castillo and RBI single by Richie Zisk. Dave Henderson doubled and scored on Todd Cruz' single in the sixth, and an RBI single by Jim Maler made it 6-3 in the seventh.

Indians 9, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and double, Andre Thornton paced the Indians to a 9-4 victory over the Rangers. The Tribe struck for six runs in the fourth frame after Texas starter Charlie Hough had retired the first 10 batters of the game. The key hits of the big inning were an RBI double by Thornton and two-run singles by Bake McBride and Jerry Dybzinski. Thornton clouted a two-run homer in the fourth.

Braves 4, Reds 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves established a modern major league record for victories at the start of a season when they recorded their 12th straight triumph, downing the Reds, 4-2. The Braves were behind, 2-1, when they came up with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on a leadoff homer by Rafael Ramirez, two-out walk to Glenn Hubbard, tie-breaking triple by Claudell Washington and a wild pitch. The first Atlanta run had come in the second frame on a homer by Chris Chambliss. Steve Bedrosian, coming on in relief in the second inning and pitching out of a bases-loaded jam, received credit for his first major league victory.

Dodgers 10, Astros 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Fernando Valenzuela ended Los Angeles' six-game losing streak by pitching the Dodgers past the Astros, 10-2. L.A. took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Dusty Baker and made it 3-1 in the fifth on an error by Houston shortstop Kiko Garcia. The Dodgers tallied three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Valenzuela, Steve Sax and Baker.

Mets 3, Cubs 2 at New York (night game):
Homers by Joel Youngblood and Dave Kingman helped power the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. Youngblood led off the second inning with his round-tripper and New York tallied another run in the same frame when Ron Gardenhire singled, moved to second when second baseman Bump Wills booted a grounder by Mike Scott and came in on a single by Mookie Wilson.

Cardinals 7, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Tommy Herr collected four hits and scored three runs as the Cardinals stretched their winning streak to nine games by downing the Pirates, 7-4. The Redbirds scored three runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh, both times after there were two out and nobody on. The sixth inning tallies came on an RBI single by Darrell Porter and a two-run double by Dane Iorg. The seventh inning markers came on a solo homer by Lonnie Smith, run-scoring double by Keith Hernandez and RBI single by George Hendrick.

Padres 8, Giants 4 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres, who riddled San Francisco pitching for 24 hits the previous night, continued their assault with a 14-hit outburst as they knocked off the Giants, 8-4, for their seventh straight victory. The Padres scored twice in the second inning on RBI singles by Terry Kennedy and John Curtis and added four runs in the third, that uprising being capped by a two-run homer by Luis Salazar.
