Tigers 7, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Homers by Jerry Turner, Kirk Gibson and Larry Herndon powered the Tigers to a 7-2 triumph over the Yankees, Detroit's eighth straight victory. Turner's clout came with the bases empty in the second inning and Gibson had a solo blast in the fourth. Herndon connected with two aboard in the sixth.
Mariners 3, Twins 2 at Seattle (night game):
Three solo homers powered the Mariners to a 3-2 triumph over the Twins. Julio Cruz and Dave Henderson connected for the circuit in the fifth inning and Todd Cruz broke a 2-2 tie with a four-ply wallop in the seventh.
Brewers 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Three-hit pitching by Pete Vuckovich carried the Brewers to a 4-1 decision over the Rangers.
Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 7 at Toronto (day game):
A three-run homer by Carl Yastrzemski climaxed a five-run fifth inning as the Red Sox edged the Blue Jays, 8-7.
Padres 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The decisive runs came on a throwing error as the Padres rallied for four runs in the eighth inning and extended their winning streak to 10 straight by beating the Braves, 6-4. With one out in the eighth and the Braves ahead, 4-2, Broderick Perkins walked and pinch-hitter Randy Bass was hit by a pitch. Dave Edwards ran for Bass and Gene Richards singled to left, scoring Perkins and bringing on Rick Camp in relief of Gene Garber. A single by Juan Bonilla scored Edwards and Richards went to third and Bonilla to second on the throw. After Garry Templeton was walked intentionally, Ruppert Jones hit a chopper in front of the mound. Camp fielded the ball but threw it past catcher Matt Sinatro, allowing Richards and Bonilla to score.
Pirates 8, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
Don Robinson yielded just one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief and went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs to lead the Pirates to an 8-5 comeback victory over the Cubs. The Bucs, who faced an early 5-0 deficit, took the lead in the seventh on an RBI double by Dave Parker and run-scoring single by Jason Thompson. Robinson added to the lead with a two-run single in the ninth.
Reds 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Dave Concepcion, Johnny Bench and Mike Vail each drove in one run to lead the Reds to a 3-2 decision over the Astros. The Reds broke on top in their first turn at bat when Ron Oester got an infield hit and scored on a double by Concepcion, who then stole third and tallied on a single by Bench. Vail delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth. Tom Hume, pitching the final frame, notched his fourth save of the season.
Mets 1, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Charlie Puleo, Pete Falcone and Neil Allen combined on a four-hitter as the Mets blanked the Expos, 1-0. The game's only run came in the seventh inning when Gary Rajsich and John Stearns lashed consecutive doubles. Allen earned his fifth save, taking over in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and stopping Montreal on a grounder and a flyout.
Cardinals 7, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A three-run rally in the eighth inning lifted the Cardinals to their 12th straight triumph, a 7-4 win over the Phillies. The Redbirds snapped a 4-4 deadlock in the eighth on a run-scoring groundout by Orlando Sanchez and a two-run single by Lonnie Smith. The Phils had been kept in the game by Bo Diaz, who hit two homers and two doubles and drove in all of his team's runs.
Dodgers 7, Giants 6 at San Francisco (night game):
Scoring two runs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers edged the Giants, 7-6. Los Angeles was behind, 6-5, when pinch-hitter Ron Roenicke opened the ninth with a walk and went to third on a pinch-single by Jorge Orta, who reached second on a sacrifice by Steve Sax. After an intentional walk to Ken Landreaux loaded the bases, Pedro Guerrero grounded out to tie the score and Rick Monday followed with a single off the glove of second baseman Joe Morgan. The Dodgers had rolled to a 5-0 lead as Guerrero had an RBI double in the first inning and three-run homer in the third, but the Giants scored six runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Jeff Leonard and two errors by Dodgers' shortstop Bill Russell.
