Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Rick Dempsey's two-run homer in the fifth inning and timely defensive plays in the ninth enabled the Orioles to edge the White Sox, 2-1. The Sox threatened in the ninth, but two Sox baserunners were thrown out. Pinch-hitter Rudy Law singled and stole second but was thrown out at third on Jerry Hairston's grounder to second baseman Rich Dauer. Ron LeFlore then doubled to left, but Hairston was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay from Gary Roenicke to Bob Bonner to Dempsey. After LeFlore moved up on a wild pitch, Tippy Martinez came in and struck out Steve Kemp to end the game.

Angels 5, A's 1 at California (day game):
A three-run uprising in the first inning propelled the Angels to a 5-1 victory over the A's. The Angels loaded the bases on three hits in their first turn at bat and Reggie Jackson grounded out to first to produce the first run. Bobby Grich followed with a two-run single. Brian Downing cracked a leadoff homer in the fifth and Grich delivered a run-scoring double later in that frame.

Royals 6, Indians 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the Royals defeated the Indians, 6-3. The Royals took the lead for good in the third inning on a solo homer by George Brett and an RBI double by Hal McRae. Tom Poquette delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth and the Royals put the game away in the fifth on Lee May's two-run homer, his first home run since July, 1980, when he played for Baltimore.

Yankees 3, Tigers 1 at New York (day game):
Three pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Yankees ended Detroit's eight-game winning streak, 3-1. Willie Randolph broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the seventh inning and the Yanks picked up an insurance run in the eighth on Rick Cerone's single. After the game, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired manager Bob Lemon and replaced him with Gene Michael.

Mariners 5, Twins 4 at Seattle (day game):
Todd Cruz, who went 4-for-4, belted a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Mariners to a 5-4 victory over the Twins. The Mariners had scored twice in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 on Al Cowens' leadoff homer and singles by Joe Simpson, Todd Cruz and pinch-hitter Bruce Bochte. Minnesota rookie Kent Hrbek clouted his eighth homer of the year leading off the seventh.

Brewers 11, Rangers 6 at Texas (day game):
Cecil Cooper drove in three runs with two doubles and a single as the Brewers won their fifth straight game, 11-6 over the Rangers. Milwaukee took a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning on a single by Ned Yost, Buddy Bell's two-base error on a grounder by Charlie Moore, an RBI single by Robin Yount and Cooper's run-scoring single. The Brewers added three runs in the eighth on a double by Cooper and Roy Howell's two-run double. Jim Gantner hit a solo homer in the ninth.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4 at Toronto (day game):
A run-scoring double by Rick Miller in the 12th inning was the key hit as the Red Sox outlasted the Blue Jays, 5-4. The game was tied, 3-3, when Glenn Hoffman opened the Red Sox 12th with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a double by Miller, who then tallied on Jerry Remy's single. John Mayberry hit two solo homers for the Blue Jays -- a sixth-inning blast that tied the game and a 12th inning shot with two out.

Cubs 5, Pirates 3 at Chicago (day game):
A four-run rally in the fourth inning enabled the Cubs to end their four-game losing streak by defeating the Pirates, 5-3. The Cubs trailed, 3-0, going into the bottom of the fourth when Keith Moreland doubled and Jody Davis walked. A double by Gary Woods delivered Moreland, and Larry Bowa doubled home two more runs. Steve Henderson then stroked a pinch-single to score Bowa. Bill Buckner's run-scoring single in the fifth gave the Cubs an insurance run. Randy Martz pitched scoreless relief over the final five frames for the victory.

Reds 4, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):
Scoring in the top of the 10th inning, the Reds shaded the Astros, 4-3. The score was 3-3 when Eddie Milner opened the 10th with an infield hit, moved to third on a single by Ron Oester and scored on Dave Concepcion's sacrifice fly. The Reds had tied the game in the ninth on Mike Vail's two-run single after Astros second baseman Phil Garner mishandled a throw at second base on what appeared to be a double play.

Expos 5, Mets 2 at Montreal (day game):
Scott Sanderson and Jeff Reardon combined on a five-hitter to hurl the Expos past the Mets, 5-2. The Expos broke a 2-2 tie in the second inning when Chris Speier singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored on Wallace Johnson's single. Speier delievered an RBI single in the fourth and Andre Dawson stroked a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Phillies 8, Cardinals 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies snapped the Cardinals' 12-game winning streak, 8-4, as Steve Carlton, going 8 1/3 innings, notched his first victory after four losses. The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a single by Gary Matthews. They added three runs in the fifth as Bob Dernier and Ivan DeJesus stroked run-scoring singles and Dernier scored as the Cards ran down DeJesus between first and second. The Phils iced the game with four runs in the eighth on sacrifice flies by Pete Rose and Manny Trillo, Matthews' single and a Garry Maddox double. The Cards tallied three times in the ninth inning but Ed Farmer came on to choke off the rally.

Giants 6, Dodgers 3 at San Francisco (day game):
A grand slam by Jeff Leonard -- the first of his career -- climaxed a five-run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Giants to a 6-3 triumph over the Dodgers. The Giants trailed, 3-1, entering the bottom of the eighth, but filled the bases with one out. Then Steve Howe replaced Fernando Valenzuela on the mound for Los Angeles and struck out Joe Morgan. Dave Stewart then replaced Howe and Jack Clark beat out an infield hit for one run. Leonard followed by clearing the sacks with a drive over the center field fence.
