Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Red Sox 3, White Sox 2 (night game) / Red Sox 5, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
The Red Sox extended their winning streak to seven games by sweeping a twin bill from the White Sox, 3-2 and 5-0. Chuck Rainey twirled a five-hitter for the shutout. The opener was deadlocked, 2-2, when Wade Boggs led off the eighth inning with a single -- his first major league hit -- reached second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Jim Rice's single. Boston took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning of the second game on a single by Rick Miller and added three runs in the sixth on Dave Stapleton's single, a bases-loaded walk to Glenn Hoffman and Gary Allenson's infield out.
Pirates 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run homer by Bill Madlock climaxed a three-run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Pirates to a 6-4 decision over the Braves, Atlanta's fourth straight loss after its record 13 season-beginning victories. The Bucs trailed, 4-3, when Dave Parker rapped a two-out double in the eighth inning and scored on a single by Jason Thompson. Madlock then followed with his blast over the left field fence.
Astros 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Ray Knight drove in three runs and Nolan Ryan recorded his first victory after four defeats as the Astros topped the Cardinals, 6-2. Ryan became the first Houston pitcher to go the distance this season. Knight drilled a two-run homer in the first inning, doubled and scored on a two-run homer by Jose Cruz in the third and delivered an RBI single in the fourth.
