Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] A's 6, Orioles 2 (night game) / Orioles 5, A's 1 at Baltimore (night game):
The A's and Orioles divided a doubleheader, the A's winning the opener, 6-2, behind the five-hit pitching of Mike Norris, and the Orioles capturing the nightcap, 5-1, as Scott McGregor tossed a five-hitter. In the first game, the A's Cliff Johnson broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run homer and Dwayne Murphy, who had singled home two runs in the second inning, drilled a solo round-tripper in the seventh. In the second game, the Orioles' John Lowenstein cracked a two-run homer in the first inning and Eddie Murray, whose 14-game hitting streak was stopped in the opener, smashed a bases-empty homer in the third.
Royals 8, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Driving in five runs with a homer and double, Hal McRae led the Royals to an 8-5 victory over the Red Sox, ending Boston's eight-game winning streak. McRae's round-tripper came in the first inning with two mates aboard, and later in the same frame Dennis Werth and Greg Pryor stroked RBI singles. McRae then drilled a two-run double in the second stanza and scored on a single by Frank White.
Indians 6, Mariners 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Blasting off with six runs in the first inning, the Indians snapped a four-game losing skein by downing the Mariners, 6-1. The Tribe sent 10 men to the plate in their first turn at bat as Mike Hargrove singled home the first run, an infield hit by Von Hayes drove in another and Rick Manning and Jack Perconte delivered two-run singles. Len Barker allowed just three hits over the first seven innings in recording his third victory of the season.
Brewers 2, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
A single by Jim Gantner drove home the winning run in the seventh inning and Rollie Fingers pitched airtight relief as the Brewers edged the White Sox, 2-1. With the score 1-1, Gorman Thomas led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, took second on a sacrifice and scored on a two-out single by Gantner. Fingers struck out three and allowed one hit over the last 2 2/3 innings to earn the victory.
Twins 4, Tigers 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Homers by Randy Johnson and Gary Gaetti powered the Twins to a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. Johnson blasted his round-tripper leading off the fourth inning and later in that frame, after a walk to John Castino, Gaetti connected for the circuit. The Twins' first run came in the second inning when Sal Butera grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.
Yankees 6, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
Scattering six hits, Tommy John pitched the Yankees to a 6-0 blanking of the Angels. It was the veteran southpaw's 43rd career shutout. The Yanks tallied twice in the first inning on an RBI single by Ken Griffey and run-scoring groundout by Dave Winfield. Griffey, Oscar Gamble and Winfield cracked successive doubles to drive home three third-inning runs.
Blue Jays 6, Rangers 4 at Toronto (night game):
A two-run pinch-single by Rance Mulliniks climaxed a three-run rally in the seventh inning that lifted the Blue Jays to a 6-4 triumph over the Rangers, extending Texas' losing skein to six games. The Jays trailed, 4-3, when Buck Martinez hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh and was replaced by pinch-runner Hosken Powell, who raced to third on a single by John Mayberry and scored on a single by Alfredo Griffin. A single by Damaso Garcia loaded the bases and Mulliniks then came through with the decisive hit.
Braves 7, Pirates 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Pittsburgh shortstop Dale Berra booted pinch-hitter Bob Watson's soft grounder with two out in the 10th inning, allowing the winning run to score from third base and enabling the Braves to snap their five-game losing streak with a 7-6 triumph over the Pirates. With two out and the game tied, 6-6, in the bottom of the 10th, Bob Horner walked and went to third on a double by Chris Chambliss. Watson then hit the grounder that Berra misplayed, allowing Watson to reach first without a throw as Horner scored. The Bucs had deadlocked the contest in the top of the ninth on an RBI by Dave Parker. The Braves had battled back from an early 5-0 deficit with a two-run homer by Dale Murphy and a solo blast by Horner being the big blows.
Cubs 6, Reds 0 at Chicago (day game):
Dickie Noles allowed just one hit -- a leadoff single by Eddie Milner in the fourth inning -- in pitching the Cubs to a 6-0 whitewashing of the Reds. The Cubs scored in the third inning on a run-scoring infield out by Bill Buckner. Steve Henderson smacked a two-run triple in a three-run fifth and Jerry Morales drilled a two-run triple in the seventh.
Phillies 9, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
A six-run rally in the ninth inning lifted the Phillies to a 9-3 victory over the Dodgers. The outburst was highlighted by three doubles and Pete Rose's fifth straight hit, tying him with Max Carey for the N.L. record of nine five-hit games. Bob Dernier doubled in the first run, Ivan DeJesus singled in two more, Bo Diaz contributed an RBI single and Julio Franco doubled in the final two tallies. The Dodgers had a 3-0 lead going into the eighth but the Phils tied the game on an RBI double by Rose, sacrifice fly by Diaz and run-scoring pinch-single by Dick Davis.
Mets 5, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Bob Bailor plated Mookie Wilson with the winning run in the top of the 15th inning as the Mets edged the Padres, 5-4, ending San Diego's 11-game winning streak. The score was 4-4 when Wilson tripled in the 15th and came home on the sacrifice fly by Bailor. Pete Falcone pitched the final five innings to earn his second victory of the season.
Giants 7, Expos 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Making his first major league start, Bill Laskey unfurled a three-hitter in twirling the Giants to a 7-0 blanking of the Expos. The Giants piled up 14 hits off four Montreal pitchers, with Champ Summers leading the attack with three hits. Consecutive singles by Summers, Darrell Evans and Jack Clark, a sacrifice fly by Jeff Ransom and singles by Johnnie LeMaster and Laskey produced three runs in the fourth inning.
Cardinals 5, Astros 4 at St. Louis (day game):
A two-run single by David Green capped a four-run sixth inning that enabled the Cardinals to shade the Astros, 5-4. Trailing, 3-1, going into the bottom of the sixth, the Redbirds loaded the bases on a single by Tommy Herr and walks to Keith Hernandez and Darrell Porter. Dave Smith, who issued the walk to Porter, also walked Dane Iorg and Ken Oberkfell, forcing in two runs and tying the game at 3-3. Green then greeted reliever Frank LaCorte with a two-run single. Bruce Sutter pitched the final two innings and received credit for his seventh save.
