A four-run outburst in the second inning propelled the A's to an 8-2 victory over the Indians. The runs came from a sacrifice fly by Mike Heath, RBI single by Dave McKay, bases-loaded walk to Rickey Henderson and sacrifice fly by Dwayne Murphy.

Royals 8, Blue Jays 7 at Kansas City (night game):
Scoring five runs in the seventh inning, the Royals held off the Blue Jays, 8-7. The game was tied, 3-3, when K.C. loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Cesar Geronimo and John Wathan and a walk to George Brett. A single by Amos Otis delivered two runs, a double by Hal McRae plated two more and a single by Onix Concepcion drove home the final runs of the outburst.

Brewers 6, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
A two-run homer by Gorman Thomas climaxed a five-run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Brewers to a 6-5 victory over the Twins.

Four Chicago pitchers combined to hurl the Cubs to a 5-1 triumph over the Braves. The Cubs tallied in the first inning on a run-scoring groundout by Leon Durham and boosted their margin to 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Keith Moreland. A squeeze bunt by Junior Kennedy produced the first run of a three-run ninth and a throwing error by second baseman Glenn Hubbard allowed two more runs to score.

Reds 10, Cardinals 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
Dan Driessen hit the first grand slam of his career and Mario Soto hurled a five-hitter as the Reds routed the Cardinals, 10-1. The Reds scored twice in the first inning on an RBI double by Dave Concepcion and run-scoring single by Cesar Cedeno.
