Orioles 6, Angels 4 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles defeated the Angels, 6-4, as Scott McGregor won his 10th straight decision over California. The score was 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning when Dan Ford beat out a bunt, Rick Dempsey walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Cal Ripken then blooped a single to left to score both runners. A single by Ken Singleton scored Baltimore's final run in the sixth.

Red Sox 6, Rangers 0 at Boston (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Dennis Eckersley pitched the Red Sox to a 6-0 blanking of the Rangers, Texas' ninth straight defeat. The Sox scored five runs in their first turn at bat on Jim Rice's single, a sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski, Glenn Hoffman's single and a two-run triple by Rich Gedman.

White Sox 10, Tigers 3 at Chicago (day game):
Lamarr Hoyt became the majors' first five-game winner by pitching the White Sox to a 10-3 victory over the Tigers. Tom Paciorek singled home two runs in the first inning and the Sox boosted their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Harold Baines. Chicago put the game on ice with a four-run fifth. Steve Kemp doubled home one run, Greg Luzinski singled home another and Baines drilled a two-run triple.

A's 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Completing the three-game series sweep, the A's downed the Indians, 5-2, behind Mike Norris' four-hit hurling. Oakland tallied three runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Jeff Burroughs, double by Joe Rudi, run-scoring groundout by Dave McKay and Jeff Newman's two-run homer. The A's added two runs in the fifth on a double by Burroughs and Rudi's single.

Blue Jays 7, Royals 5 at Kansas City (day game):
Lloyd Moseby and Willie Upshaw each knocked in two runs as the Blue Jays posted a 7-5 triumph over the Royals. The Jays scored twice in the opening inning on Upshaw's single and a double by Al Woods. They made it 4-0 in the fifth on Moseby's two-run double. Upshaw delivered his second RBI with a seventh-inning single. The Royals rallied for three runs in the ninth, but Roy Lee Jackson came on to get the last two outs and earn the save.

Brewers 11, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Ted Simmons blasted a pair of three-run homers and Gorman Thomas added a solo shot to power the Brewers to an 11-4 pounding of the Twins. Simmons' first swat capped a four-run first inning and came after Ben Oglivie singled home the first tally of that frame. Simmons' second smash came in the seventh. Thomas homered in the third inning.

Yankees 4, Mariners 2 at New York (day game):
A three-run surge in the eighth inning enabled the Yankees to defeat the Mariners, 4-2. The score was 1-1 when Willie Randolph doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth and went to third on a sharp single by Jerry Mumphrey. Dave Winfield then hit a liner that struck third base and went straight up, leaving third baseman Lenny Randle with no play. The Yanks loaded the bases and Roy Smalley singled home two more runs.

Braves 10, Cubs 3 at Atlanta (day game):
Bob Walk pitched his first complete game, a five-hitter, as the Braves thrashed the Cubs, 10-3. The Braves took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Dale Murphy and Chris Chambliss and a two-run single by Bruce Benedict. A three-run double by Jerry Royster highlighted a six-run outburst in the fifth inning.

[DH] Reds 5, Cardinals 1 (day game) / Cardinals 6, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Reds and Cardinals split a doubleheader, the Reds taking the first game, 5-1, and the Cardinals winning the second contest, 6-4. The Reds tallied twice in the first inning of the lidlifter on an RBI single by Dave Concepcion and a throwing error by catcher Darrell Porter, and added three runs in the third on a run-scoring groundout by Cesar Cedeno, sacrifice fly by Larry Biittner and RBI single by Dan Driessen. In the second game, John Martin had a no-hitter until Ron Oester cracked a leadoff double in the seventh inning. Cincinnati finally kayoed the lefthander in the ninth but Bruce Sutter came on to register his eighth save. Keith Hernandez stroked an RBI single in the first inning. The Cardinals then exploded for five runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Hernandez and three-run homer by Gene Tenace.

Expos 13, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Laying down a barrage of 17 hits, the Expos walloped the Dodgers, 13-1. Montreal scored four runs in the first inning on two-run singles by Warren Cromartie and Tim Wallach. Four singles produced three runs in the fifth and Wallach completed the scoring with his first homer of the year in the eighth.

Astros 6, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Joe Niekro and Randy Moffitt combined on a five-hitter as the Astros triumphed over the Pirates, 6-2. Houston jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Ray Knight, RBI double by Alan Ashby and run-scoring single by Art Howe. Jose Cruz cracked a two-run double in the fourth.

Phillies 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (day game):
Mike Krukow pitched a four-hitter for his second shutout of the season and Mike Schmidt hit his first homer of the year to lead the Phillies to a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Schmidt's blast came in the fifth inning was a mate aboard. The Phils got their other marker in the first frame on a run-scoring groundout by Gary Matthews.

[DH] Giants 4, Mets 3 (day game) / Mets 2, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants and Mets divided a twin bill, the Giants winning the first game, 4-3, and the Mets winning the nightcap, 2-0, to end a five-game winning streak for the Giants and a four-game losing streak for New York. Chili Davis hit a solo homer for the Giants in the first inning of the first game and Darrell Evans had a solo clout in the second inning. The Giants tallied another run later in that frame on an RBI double by Duane Kuiper. George Foster hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game as Randy Jones and Neil Allen combined on the shutout.
