Today's scores and summaries:

Mariners 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Scoring two runs after two were out in the ninth inning, the Mariners edged the Orioles, 4-3. Seattle trailed, 3-2, when Todd Cruz singled with one out in the top of the ninth, went to second on a single by Joe Simpson, advanced to third on a fly and scored on a single by Jim Essian. The ball hit center fielder Al Bumbry on the leg and bounced away for an error, allowing Simpson to score the go-ahead run. Seattle's Steve Stroughter led off the fifth inning with his first major league homer.

Red Sox 5, Twins 3 at Boston (night game):
A four-run outburst in the third inning carried the Red Sox to their 13th triumph in the last 14 games, a 5-3 verdict over the Twins. Dwight Evans led off the third with an infield hit and was safe at second on a fielder's choice when second baseman Ron Washington failed to touch the bag after fielding Jim Rice's grounder. A single by Carney Lansford plated Evans and a double by Dave Stapleton drove home Rice. Glenn Hoffman then chased home Lansford and Stapleton with a single up the middle past the drawn-in infield.

White Sox 4, Blue Jays 3 at Chicago (night game):
A three-run homer by Greg Luzinski climaxed a four-run sixth inning that carried the White Sox to a 4-3 decision over the Blue Jays. Bill Almon led off the Chicago sixth with a single, went to second when first baseman Willie Upshaw dropped an attempted pickoff throw and scored on a single by Ron LeFlore. A single by Tony Bernazard sent LeFlore to third. Bernazard moved to second and LeFlore held third as Steve Kemp bounced out to the mound. Luzinski then drilled a 425-foot blast to provide the Sox with the winning margin. Salome Barojas pitched the final three innings to earn his seventh save.

Indians 6, Angels 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians snapped their four-game losing skein with a 6-5 victory over the Angels. The Tribe broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning when Toby Harrah lashed a two-out double and scored on a double by Mike Hargrove. After an intentional walk to Andre Thornton, Bill Nahorodny doubled home two more runs. The Indians' final marker came in the eighth frame on an RBI single by Alan Bannister.

Tigers 4, Rangers 3 at Detroit (night game):
An errant throw on a double-play attempt allowed the decisive run to score as the Tigers dealt the Rangers their 10th straight defeat, 4-3. The game was tied, 3-3, when Chet Lemon opened the Detroit eighth with a walk and reached second on a sacrifice. After Kirk Gibson was walked intentionally, Larry Herndon bounced to third baseman Buddy Bell, who threw to second baseman Doug Flynn to force Gibson. But Gibson slid hard into second and Flynn's relay sailed into the dugout, allowing Lemon to trot home.

Brewers 9, Royals 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
A two-run homer by Charlie Moore in the sixth inning sparked the Brewers to a 9-5 triumph over the Royals. Moore's round-tripped scored Larry Hisle, who had walked, and wiped out a 5-4 deficit. The Brewers tallied three more runs in the seventh on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Moore and shortstop Onix Concepcion's wild throw into the dugout while attempting to complete a double play. Jim Slaton, relieving in the fifth, hurled scoreless ball the rest of the way to get his first victory of the season.

A's 9, Yankees 7 at New York (night game):
Tony Armas doubled home two runs in the 13th inning to lift the A's to their sixth straight victory, a 9-7 decision over the Yankees. With the score 7-7, Rickey Henderson opened the 13th with a triple and, after Dwayne Murphy walked, Armas delivered a two-bagger that scored both runners. The Yankees had battled back from an early 7-1 deficit, tying the contest in the seventh on a three-run homer by Dave Winfield.

Reds 5, Astros 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tom Seaver won his first game of the season and 260th of his career as the Reds captured a 5-2 decision over the Astros. The Reds scored twice in their first turn at bat on a two-run single by Cesar Cedeno, added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Dan Driessen and another in the seventh on successive singles by Dave Concepcion, Cedeno and Johnny Bench. Seaver yielded just four hits in seven innings before Tom Hume came on to record his sixth save.

Dodgers 2, Mets 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A single by Dusty Baker with the bases loaded in the ninth inning enabled the Dodgers to shade the Mets, 2-1. The game was tied, 1-1, when Los Angeles filled the sacks in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Fernando Valenzuela, two-base throwing error by New York pitcher Neil Allen on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Sax and an intentional walk to Steve Garvey. After Derrel Thomas was brought in to run for Valenzuela, Baker delivered the game-winning hit.

Pirates 8, Braves 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The first grand slam of Mike Easler's career highlighted the Pirates' 8-4 victory over the Braves. The Bucs tallied twice in the first inning on an RBI double by Dave Parker and RBI single by Jason Thompson. They loaded the bases in the third on singles by Omar Moreno and Johnny Ray and a walk to Thompson. Bill Madlock then singled home Moreno and Easler followed with his circuit clout.

Padres 7, Expos 3 at San Diego (night game):
Garry Templeton and Sixto Lezcano homered in the first inning to trigger the Padres to a 7-3 triumph over the Expos. Templeton's clout came with one out following a single by Juan Bonilla, and Lezcano's round-tripper came one out later. Floyd Chiffer, relieving for San Diego in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two out, retired Tim Wallach on a groundout to pick up his first major league save. The Padres put the game out of reach in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Lezcano and RBI double by Terry Kennedy.

Phillies 9, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Three-run homers by George Vukovich and Steve Carlton powered the Phillies to a 9-4 victory over the Giants. Vukovich's blast broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning and followed a walk to Mike Schmidt and an error by third baseman Darrell Evans. Carlton's clout came in the second inning after a walk to Bo Diaz and single by Manny Trillo. Carlton struck out 10 in seven innings and Ron Reed came on to hurl two scoreless frames.

Cardinals 7, Cubs 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Homers by Keith Hernandez and George Hendrick paced the Cardinals to a 7-4 victory over the Cubs. Hernandez blasted a two-run round-tripper in the third inning and Hendrick delivered a solo swat in the fifth. Bruce Sutter relieved in the seventh inning and, after uncorking a wild pitch that allowed the Cubs to score their third run of the frame, retired all seven batters he faced to notch his ninth save. The Redbirds put the game on ice in the eighth inning with sacrifice flies by Sutter and Lonnie Smith.
