Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Dan Ford, Cal Ripken and Gary Roenicke hit homers to lead the Orioles to a 5-3 decision over the Angels. Roenicke cracked a solo shot in the second inning, Ripken put the Birds ahead with a bases-empty clout in the fifth and Ford drilled a two-run circuit swat in the sixth. Later in that same inning, Ripken delivered an RBI double.

White Sox 8, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Driving in three runs with two homers and a single, Jim Morrison paced the White Sox to an 8-5 verdict over the Tigers. Morrison singled in a second-inning run, cracked a leadoff homer in the fifth and added a solo swat in the sixth. The Sox tallied three times in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Mike Squires followed by a two-run triple by Harold Baines. Chico Escarrega, the fifth Sox pitcher, got the last two outs to record his first save.

Brewers 4, Twins 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Gorman Thomas, Ted Simmons and Cecil Cooper powered the Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the Twins. Thomas hit a solo clout in the second inning, Simmons broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run shot in the fourth and Cooper delivered with the bases empty in the sixth. The Twins' Kent Hrbek hit safely in his 17th consecutive game by laying down a perfect bunt single in the sixth.

Indians 15, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
The Indians weathered a five-run first inning by the A's, then put together three big rallies of their own to take a 15-6 victory, snapping Oakland's seven-game winning streak. Andre Thornton's two-run homer touched off the Tribe's seven-run fourth inning, and Cleveland scored four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Von Hayes and Bake McBride drove in three runs apiece. Ed Whitson held the A's hitless and struck out six in 4 2/3 innings to gain the save.

Mariners 5, Yankees 2 at Seattle (night game):
The Mariners notched their third straight victory, a 5-2 decision over the Yankees, New York's fourth consecutive loss. Seattle broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning on a run-scoring groundout by Jim Maler and scored another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Julio Cruz. Todd Cruz drilled a solo homer in the seventh.

Rangers 1, Red Sox 0 at Texas (night game):
Bobby Johnson's first hit of the season -- a leadoff homer in the fifth inning -- produced the only run of the contest as the Rangers snapped their 12-game losing streak with a 1-0 triumph over the Red Sox. The Sox outhit Texas, 12-4, and put their leadoff batter on base in five of the first six innings, but a series of outstanding defensive plays behind Doc Medich and Danny Darwin erased six Boston baserunners. The Rangers tied a club record by turning in five double plays.

Blue Jays 6, Royals 4 at Toronto (night game):
Willie Upshaw drove in two runs with a pair of singles, including the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Blue Jays triumphed over the Royals, 6-4. The score was 4-4 when Rance Mulliniks stroked a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Mullinks stole second and raced home on a single by Upshaw. Ernie Whitt provided an insurance tally with a solo homer in the eighth. The benches cleared in the third inning when K.C. pitcher Dennis Leonard fired a fastball behind Damaso Garcia, who ventured toward the mound before being intercepted by plate umpire Larry Barnett. In the top of that frame, John Wathan had been hit by a pitch from Jim Clancy.

Cubs 12, Astros 6 at Chicago (day game):
Keith Moreland drove in seven runs with a pair of three-run homers and a single as the Cubs battered Nolan Ryan for nine hits and nine runs in 2 1/3 innings en route to a 12-6 victory over the Astros. Moreland's first round-tripper came in the first inning and his second circuit blast came in the sixth. His run-scoring single came in the third. Randy Martz, who pitched seven strong innings to be the winning pitcher, also cracked a three-run double in the third inning.

Reds 5, Pirates 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Mario Soto fired a five-hitter and struck out 11 in twirling the Reds to a 5-0 whitewashing of the Pirates. The Reds tallied in the second inning on a run-scoring groundout by Johnny Bench and boosted their margin to 2-0 in the third on an RBI double by Dave Concepcion. A two-run double by Ron Oester was the key blow of a three-run seventh. Pittsburgh's Jason Thompson had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.

Dodgers 6, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Bob Welch pitched the Dodgers to a 6-2 decision over the Expos as Dusty Baker led the Los Angeles attack, driving in four runs with a two-run homer, sacrifice fly and single. The Dodgers scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Rick Monday and added another run in the second on a solo homer by Steve Garvey. Baker's round-tripper came in the third frame after a double by Ken Landreaux and pushed the Dodgers into a 4-0 lead.

Mets 3, Giants 2 at New York (night game):
Dave Kingman belted his 10th homer as the Mets edged the Giants, 3-2. Kingman's blast came with the bases empty in the first inning and gave the Mets a 2-0 lead. The first New York run came when George Foster bounced into a double play. The Giants loaded the bases with none out in the top of the ninth, but Neil Allen got the save by getting Milt May to hit into a forceout and getting Johnnie LeMaster on a line drive to second baseman Tom Veryzer, who doubled May off first to end the game.

Phillies 5, Padres 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt climaxed a four-run ninth inning with a three-run homer to lift the Phillies to a 5-2 victory over the Padres. The Phils were behind, 2-1, when Manny Trillo opened the bottom of the ninth with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Julio Franco, who advanced to second on a sacrifice, reached third on a single by pinch-hitter Ozzie Virgil and scored while shortstop Garry Templeton was throwing out Bob Dernier at first. After Pete Rose was walked intentionally, Luis DeLeon took over the Padres' pitching chores and was greeted by Schmidt's blast into the left field bullpen.

Braves 6, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Chris Chambliss in the 10th inning was the decisive blow as the Braves downed the Cardinals, 6-3. The game was deadlocked, 3-3, when Glenn Hubbard walked to open the 10th. One out later, Dale Murphy singled and reached second when the Cards attempted unsuccessfully to get Hubbard at third. Pinch-hitter Bob Watson then was intentionally walked to load the bases. After John Martin went to a 2-0 count on Chambliss he was replaced by Jim Kaat, who threw one strike before Chambliss cleared the sacks with a shot into the left field corner. The Braves had tied the contest in the top of the ninth when St. Louis second baseman Tommy Herr bobbled a potential game-ending double play grounder by Biff Pocoroba with the bases loaded.
