Angels 8, Orioles 4 at California (day game):
Don Baylor, Bobby Grich and Tim Foli delivered key blows as the Angels defeated the Orioles, 8-4. Baylor slugged a two-run homer in the first inning, Grich blasted a three-run round-tripper in the seventh and Foli capped that five-run rally with a two-run double. Foli also had an RBI triple in the sixth. Bruce Kison scattered four hits over seven innings for his first victory since last September 29.
White Sox 4, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
The White Sox stretched ther winning streak to six games by edging the Tigers, 4-3. The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Tony Bernazard and Steve Kemp, an RBI double by Greg Luzinski and Tom Paciorek's sacrifice fly. Rudy Law delivered a run-scoring single in the second and added an RBI triple in the ninth. Salome Barojas gained his eighth save despite allowing a solo pinch-homer by Tom Brookens in the ninth.
Brewers 6, Twins 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Jim Gantner drove in three runs with a triple and homer and Ben Oglivie belted a two-run homer to spark the Brewers to a 6-2 decision over the Twins and a sweep of the four-game series. Oglivie's round-tripper broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and Gantner drilled a solo shot in the sixth. Gantner's three-bagger drove home two runs in the fourth.
Indians 14, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
Two homers by Andre Thornton paced the Indians to a 14-2 rout of the A's. Thornton smashed a two-run round-tripper in the first inning and hit another two-run shot in the third. The Tribe scored eight runs in the ninth inning, with Mike Hargrove and Ron Hassey clouting two-run homers and Rick Manning delivering a bases-empty wallop.
Yankees 3, Mariners 0 at Seattle (night game):
Combining on a five-hitter, Tommy John and Rich Gossage pitched the Yankees to a 3-0 blanking of the Mariners. The Yanks scored in the third inning on a run-scoring infield single by Willie Randolph, and iced the game in the ninth when Dave Winfield doubled and Oscar Gamble followed with a home run.
Red Sox 1, Rangers 0 at Texas (day game):
Clutch relief pitching by Bob Stanley and Mark Clear carried the Red Sox to a 1-0 shutout of the Rangers. The Sox scored in the sixth inning on a two-out walk to Dwight Evans, single by Jim Rice and Tony Perez' double. Stanley came on with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and got Lamar Johnson to ground out to end the Texas threat.
Blue Jays 2, Royals 0 at Toronto (day game):
Scattering eight hits, Dave Stieb pitched the Blue Jays to a 2-0 blanking of the Royals, completing the three-game series sweep for Toronto. The Jays took a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Jesse Barfield and andded an insurance tally in the eighth when Willie Upshaw singled, went to second on a sacrifice by Alfredo Griffin and came in on Rance Mulliniks' pinch single.
Cubs 6, Astros 3 at Chicago (day game):
Jody Davis' three-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the Cubs to a 6-3 triumph over the Astros, completing the three-game series sweep. The game was deadlocked, 3-3, when Leon Durham doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth and went to third on a groundout. An intentional walk to pinch-hitter Bob Molinaro backfired when Davis delivered the game-winning blast.
Pirates 6, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Kayoing Tom Seaver with four runs in the third inning, the Pirates went on to down the Reds, 6-3. Don Robinson doubled with one out in the third and scored on a double by Johnny Ray. Dave Parker then doubled home Ray before Jason Thompson, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, unloaded a homer to right field.
Dodgers 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (day game):
Completing the four-game series sweep, the Dodgers shaded the Expos, 5-4. Los Angeles trailed, 3-1 in the fifth inning, when Steve Sax reached second on an error by Tim Raines. Dusty Baker's double scored Sax and, after Rick Monday walked, Pedro Guerrero drilled a ball into the left field stands.
Mets 6, Giants 5 at New York (day game):
Rusty Staub, 2-for-21 and hitless in his last 16 at bats, hit a pinch-homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mets a 6-5 victory over the Giants. The Giants had tied the game in the eighth on a two-out solo round-tripper by Tom O'Malley, the rookie's first major league home run.
Padres 6, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Tim Lollar pitched a four-hitter as the Padres ended the Phils' six-game winning streak, 6-0. The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff double by Kurt Bevacqua and two-out single by Lollar. Bevacqua stroked a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the Padres kayoed Steve Carlton in the eighth, scoring four runs on a double by Garry Templeton, Luis Salazar's two-run single and a single by Bevacqua.
Braves 3, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (day game):
Bob Horner drove in two runs with a single and homer and four Atlanta pitchers combined on a three-hitter for a 3-0 triumph over the Cardinals. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a leadoff double by Dale Murphy and Horner's single. Horner increased the lead to 2-0 in the sixth with a one-out bases-empty blast over the left field wall.
