Angels 2, Yankees 1 at California (night game):
Geoff Zahn scattered five hits in twirling the Angels to a 2-1 triumph over the Yankees. The Angels broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning when Tim Foli singled with one out, went to third on a single by Bob Boone and scored on Brian Downing's single.

Royals 3, Brewers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Amos Otis drove reliever Rollie Fingers' first pitch of the ninth inning over the left field wall to give the Royals a 3-2 triumph over the Brewers. K.C. had tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning on John Wathan's two-run homer. Winner Vida Blue went the distance on a six-hitter.

Red Sox 9, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
Exploding for six runs in the third ininng, the Red Sox went on to a 9-5 thumping of the Twins. Rich Gedman led off the third with a homer and before the inning was over, the Red Sox scored five more times on a two-run double by Glenn Hoffman, Carl Yastrzemski's double, a single by Jim Rice and a groundout by Dave Stapleton. Rice clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth.

A's 7, Orioles 6 at Oakland (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the 10th inning, the A's edged the Orioles, 7-6. After the Birds took a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th on Dan Ford's sacrifice fly, Joe Rudi began the bottom of the frame with a base on balls and was replaced by pinch-runner Jimmy Sexton. Wayne Gross sacrificed and both runners were safe when the throw to second on an attempted forceout was late. Two outs later, Jeff Burroughs delivered a pinch-single to score Sexton with the tying run. Gross went to third on the play and Rickey Henderson followed with a single that plated Gross.

Mariners 6, Indians 4 at Seattle (night game):
Jim Essian drove in four runs with a homer and single to pace the Mariners' 6-4 victory over the Indians. Essian blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and capped a three-run eighth with a two-run single. An infield single by Al Cowens drove in the first run of the eighth inning.

Tigers 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Mike Ivie's first American League homer in the first inning triggered the Tigers' 3-1 victory over the Rangers as Milt Wilcox went the route on an eight-hitter. Ivie's blow followed a two-out walk to Kirk Gibson. Detroit's final run came in the ninth on an error by second baseman Bill Stein.

White Sox 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
Homers by Steve Kemp, Tony Bernazard and Greg Luzinski powered the White Sox to their seventh straight victory, 6-3 over the Blue Jays. Kemp drilled a two-run circuit swat in the seventh inning to lift the Sox to a 4-3 lead, and Bernazard and Luzinski connected with the bases empty in the ninth.

Astros 7, Pirates 3 at Houston (night game):
Don Sutton posted his fifth victory of the season as the Astros pounded the Pirates, 7-3. Houston tallied in their first turn at bat on a two-run single by Art Howe and added four runs in the second inning on a two-run triple by Ray Knight and two-run single by Alan Ashby.

Expos 5, Giants 4 at Montreal (night game):
A three-run rally in the eighth inning enabled to Expos to snap their five-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Giants. The Expos, trailing 4-2, loaded the bases in the eighth on singles by Al Oliver and Tim Wallach and an intentional walk to Chris Speier. A pinch-single by Dan Norman drove in two runs and Tim Raines followed with a double that chased Speier home with the decisive marker.

Mets 3, Padres 2 at New York (night game):
A two-out, two-run pinch-double by Bob Bailor in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Mets to a 3-2 triumph over the Padres. New York trailed, 2-1, when Ellis Valentine began the winning surge with a leadoff single. Hubie Brooks struck out and Rusty Staub grounded out, but the rally was kept alive with a walk to pinch-hitter George Foster, who was replaced by pinch-runner Wally Backman. Bailor then doubled into the left field corner to score both runners.

Phillies 9, Dodgers 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to shade the Dodgers, 9-8, ending Los Angeles' five-game winning skein. Greg Gross walked with one out in the 10th, went to third on a single by Bob Dernier and came in on a single by Pete Rose. The Dodgers had tied the game with a sux-run outburst in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Ron Cey, two-out single by Mike Scioscia and RBI singles by pinch-hitter Jose Morales, Steve Yeager and Steve Sax.

Reds 3, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Johnny Bench hit a homer, double and single to lead the Reds to a 3-1 decision over the Cardinals. Eddie Milner began the game with a single, went to third on a single by Ron Oester and scored when Dave Concepcion hit into a double play. Bench then followed with a homer. Bench singled in the ninth inning and raced home on a hit-and-run double by Dan Driessen.
