Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 3, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Pushing across a run in the eighth inning, the Yankees edged the Angels, 3-2. The game was tied, 2-2, when Ken Griffey stroked a one-out single in the eighth, went to third on a single by Oscar Gamble and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Collins.
Royals 17, Brewers 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Lashing out 21 hits, including three-run homers by Hal McRae and Willie Wilson and a two-run shot by Amos Otis, and tying a club record with 36 total bases, the Royals routed the Brewers, 17-3. Wilson's round-tripper came in the eighth inning and was an inside-the-park affair, the eighth of his career.
Twins 10, Red Sox 6 at Minnesota (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the sixth inning, the Twins went on to down the Red Sox, 10-6. After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the sixth, the Twins pounded out six straight singles -- by Gary Ward, Butch Wynegar, Randy Bush, Bobby Mitchell, Ron Washington and John Castino. Ward drilled a solo homer in the seventh.
Orioles 7, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Taking advantage of three Oakland errors, the Orioles defeated the A's, 7-1, as Scott McGregor pitched a three-hitter for eight innings. The Birds scored in the fourth inning when Rich Dauer, who had reached base safely when Dwayne Murphy dropped his fly ball, came in on a sacrifice fly by ken Singleton. The Orioles added two tallies in the fifth when catcher Jeff Newman threw the ball wildly past first attempting to compete a double play after a forceout at home.
Indians 5, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Von Hayes delivered the game-winning hit as the Indians outlasted the Mariners, 5-4 in 14 innings. Alan Bannister walked in the top of the 14th, stole second with one out and scored on Hayes' hit. Seattle had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Al Cowens and a run-scoring grounder by Julio Cruz.
Blue Jays 9, White Sox 4 at Toronto (night game):
The Blue Jays snapped Chicago's seven-game winning streak, downing the White Sox, 9-4. The Jays scored twice in the first inning on a two-run single by Jesse Barfield and boosted their lead to 4-0 in the third on a two-run homer by Wayne Nordhagen. Barfield and Buck Martinez stroked RBI singles in the seventh for the Jays' final two markers.
Cubs 6, Braves 4 at Chicago (day game):
Jody Davis crashed two homers, leading the Cubs to a 6-4 triumph over the Braves. The Chicago catcher hit a solo blast in the fifth inning and capped a four-run sixth with a two-run shot. The first two runs of the sixth came on an error by Atlanta shortstop Rafael Ramirez and an RBI single by Leon Durham.
Astros 4, Pirates 2 at Houston (night game):
A two-run homer by Phil Garner triggered the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. The circuit swat came in the second inning and the Astros picked up another run later in that frame on an error by pitcher Tom Griffin. Houston's final run came in the third on an RBI double by Denny Walling.
Giants 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Jack Clark hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and added an RBI double in the sixth to spark the Giants to a 5-4 triumph over the Expos. After Clark's two-bagger produced the first run in the sixth, Jim Wohlford beat out a slow grounder to second on which two runners crossed the plate.
Mets 6, Padres 0 at New York (night game):
Charlie Puleo fired a four-hitter for his first major league complete game and Dave Kingman drove in four runs with a double and his 12th homer to lift the Mets to a 6-0 blanking of the Padres. Kingman doubled home the first two runs of the first inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch. He climaxed a three-run fifth with a two-run homer.
Phillies 9, Dodgers 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies recorded the eighth victory in their last nine games, outslugging the Dodgers, 9-8. The Phils, trailing 5-3, opened the bottom of the fifth inning with five straight hits -- a single by Pete Rose, triple by Mike Schmidt, single by Gary Matthews, single by Bo Diaz and an infield hit by Dick Davis. After a double play that went home to first, Ivan DeJesus drilled a two-run single.
Cardinals 5, Reds 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Driving in two runs with a homer and single, George Hendrick sparked the Cardinals to a 5-1 decision over the Reds. Hendrick put the Redbirds ahead, 1-0, in the first inning when his infield single scored Ken Oberkfell, who had doubled, and he walloped a solo round-tripper in the fourth.
