Angels 3, Indians 2 at California (night game):
Dan Spillner walked Juan Beniquez with the bases full and two out in the 12th inning to give the Angels a 3-2 triumph over the Indians.
White Sox 13, Brewers 2 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox unleashed a 20-hit attack and LaMarr Hoyt became the major leagues' first seven=game winner in a 13-2 romp past the Brewers. Greg Luzinski and Carlton Fisk each drove in three runs and Luzinski and Ron LeFlore homered for the Sox.
Tigers 6, Twins 2 at Detroit (night game):
Larry Herndon's home run leading off the second inning proved to be the deciding blow as the Tigers trimmed the Twins, 6-2, behind the six-hit pitching of Jack Morris. Kent Hrbek hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth, extending his hitting streak to 23 games.
Royals 11, Red Sox 2 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals scored six runs in the first inning when Frank White and Onix Concepcion delivered run-scoring doubles, and went on to rout the Red Sox, 11-2.
Yankees 6, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
The Yankees turned four walks, Bo McLaughin's wild pitch and Steve Balboni's double into a three-run sixth inning that produced a 6-4 victory over the A's. Balboni also hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his first major league homer.
Orioles 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle (night game):
Al Bumbry and Dan Ford belted home runs in the seventh inning and Dennis Martinez pitched a four-hitter to help the Orioles subdue the Mariners, 3-1.
Rangers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Texas (night game):
George Wright reached base on a fielder's choice in the ninth inning, stole second, advanced to third on a wild throw by catcher Ernie Whitt and then scored the winning run on shortstop Alfredo Griffin's throwing error as the Rangers edged the Blue Jays, 4-3.
Cardinals 10, Braves 9 at Atlanta (night game):
Ken Oberkfell's run-scoring single in the ninth inning proved decisive when the Cardinals outlasted the Braves, 10-9 in a 29-hit swatfest. Claudell Washington hit a home run and Dale Murphy unloaded a two-run blast, his 11th homer of the season and second of the game, against Bruce Sutter in the ninth. Tito Landrum hit his first major league homer for the Cards in the second inning.
Cubs 5, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
The Cubs stopped the Astros, 5-0, with Allen Ripley and Lee Smith combining on a three-hitter. Keith Moreland drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly for the Cubs' fifth victory in six games.
Expos 6, Padres 5 at Montreal (night game):
Pinch-hitter Terry Francona singled, advanced on Tim Raines' sacrifice and scored the winning run on Warren Cromartie's single in the 11th inning of the Expos' 6-5 victory over the Padres.
Mets 4, Dodgers 2 at New York (night game):
Hubie Brooks accounted for all of the Mets runs with two-run singles in the first and fourth innings for a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers. Pete Falcone, with help from Neil Allen, posted his first victory over the Dodgers since 1976. The Dodgers, who stranded 11 runners, missed a chance for a big inning in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out, but Falcone retired Steve Garvey and Ron Cey.
Phillies 8, Giants 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies defeated the Giants, 8-1, and climbed above .500 for the first time this season. Gary Matthews hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Dick Ruthven pitched a six-hitter as the Phils won for the 10th time in 11 games.
Reds 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A run-scoring double by pinch-hitter Rafael Landestoy capped a ninth-inning rally that enabled the Reds to overcome the Pirates, 2-1.
