Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Indians 2 at California (night game):
Bobby Grich delivered a two-out, tie-breaking single in the fifth inning and saved two runs with an outstanding fielding play in the seventh to lead the Angels to a 5-2 decision over the Indians. The fifth-inning single drove in Brian Downing, who was aboard via a double. In the Indians' seventh, with runners on second and third and two out, Grich went deep behind second base to grab Toby Harrah's grounder and threw him out at first.

Brewers 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Two homers by Gorman Thomas enabled the Brewers to snap their four-game losing skein with a 2-1 triumph over the White Sox. Thomas' circuit clouts came in the second and fourth innings. Rollie Fingers notched his seventh save, taking over in the seventh stanza with a runner on third and two out and shutting down the Sox without a hit the rest of the way.

Tigers 4, Twins 2 at Detroit (night game):
A two-run homer by Kirk Gibson with two out in the 11th inning lifted the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Twins. Aboard was Lynn Jones, who had singled with one out. The game was marred by two bench-clearing brawls sparked by beanball incidents. The Twins' Kent Hrbek went 0-for-5 to snap his consecutive game hitting streak at 23, three games short of the A.L. record for a rookie.

Yankees 7, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Dave Winfield climaxed a five-run rally in the seventh inning that gave the Yankees a 7-4 win over the A's. The winning surge began when the Yanks loaded the bases with two outs on singles by Bucky Dent and Andre Robertson and a walk to Ken Griffey. Bobby Murcer doubled to plate two tallies and Winfield followed with his four-ply wallop.

Orioles 11, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
Collecting 16 hits, the Orioles routed the Mariners, 11-4. Dan Ford drilled a three-run homer in the first inning and the Birds scored twice in the second on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Lenn Sakata. They added three more in the third on a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Cal Ripken, RBI single by Rick Dempsey and RBI double by Sakata.

Rangers 4, Blue Jays 3 at Texas (night game):
After stroking an RBI single to tie the score with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Doug Flynn delivered a sacrifice fly in the 11th, enabling the Rangers to shade the Blue Jays, 4-3. The game-winning RBI was set up by a walk to Larry Parrish, double by Pat Putnam and an intentional walk to Leon Roberts. One out later, Flynn drove in the decisive tally.

Braves 2, Cardinals 1 at Atlanta (night game):
A homer by Biff Pocoroba broke a 1-1 tie with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Braves a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. The Redbirds had deadlocked the contest in the top of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Keith Hernandez. The Braves' earlier run came on a solo homer by Rafael Ramirez in the seventh.

Cubs 6, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A five-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Cubs to a 6-3 triumph over the Astros. The uprising was highlighted by doubles by Bump Wills, Bill Buckner and Gary Woods and a triple by Larry Bowa. The Cubs added a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Steve Henderson.

Expos 8, Padres 7 at Montreal (night game):
A two-run single by Andre Dawson capped a three-run eighth inning that enabled the Expos to edge the Padres, 8-7. The first run of the eighth came on an RBI pinch-single by Terry Francona, and the sacks became loaded when Tim Raines followed with a single and Warren Cromartie walked. Floyd Chiffer then relieved Gary Lucas and was greeted by Dawson's hit.

Dodgers 4, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Fernando Valenzuela scattered seven hits and drove home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, leading the Dodgers to a 4-1 decision over the Mets. Dusty Baker added a solo homer in the sixth as Los Angeles ended its four-game losing skein.

Phillies 2, Giants 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton pitched a no-hitter for 7 2/3 innings before settling for a two-hitter in twirling the Phillies to a 2-0 whitewashing of the Giants. The no-hit bid was broken up by rookie catcher Bob Brenly, playing in his first game of the year. Johnnie LeMaster followed with another single before the side was retired. The Phils scored in the first inning on doubled by Mike Schmidt and Gary Matthews and added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Bo Diaz.

Pirates 8, Reds 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Lee Lacy hit a ball over the fence for an apparent grand slam in the eighth inning, but he passed teammate Omar Moreno while circling the bases and was called out, turning the slam into a single. But three runs scored on the play to cap the Pirates' comeback from a 5-0 first-inning deficit, lifting the Bucs to an 8-7 triumph over the Reds.
