Completing the four-game series sweep, the Angels whitewashed the Indians, 3-0, behind the four-hit hurling of Ken Forsch. The Angels' first run came in the fourth inning when Don Baylor scored from second on an infield hit by Doug DeCinces. Reggie Jackson and Fred Lynn hit solo homers in the eighth.
White Sox 6, Brewers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Kemp drove in three runs and Salome Barojas registered his ninth save as the White Sox downed the Brewers, 6-1. The Sox took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Kemp and run-scoring forceout by Tom Paciorek. Kemp stroked a two-run single to highlight a four-run seventh that put the game on ice.
Tigers 7, Twins 6 at Detroit (day game):
In a game featuring eight homers, the Tigers completed a four-game series sweep by edging the Twins, 7-6. Larry Herndon lashed a solo round-tripper to break a 6-6 tie in the seventh inning. The Twins took a 5-0 lead in the first inning as Randy Johnson slammed a two-run homer, Tom Brunansky and John Castino drilled solo shots and Tim Laudner stroked an RBI single. Alan Trammell unloaded a grand slam in the second inning and Mike Ivie tied the game at 5-5 with a leadoff belt in the third. Chet Lemon gave Detroit a 6-5 lead with a homer in the fourth but Dave Engle retied the game at 6-6 with a leadoff round-tripper in the sixth.
Royals 5, Red Sox 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Combining on a five-hitter, Dennis Leonard and Dan Quisenberry pitched the Royals to a 5-0 blanking of the Red Sox. Amos Otis doubled home a K.C. run in the first inning and the Royals picked up two more in the second on a double by Greg Pryor and John Wathan's infield single. A single by Wathan drove in a fourth-inning run and Frank White's single delivered the final run in the eighth.
A's 7, Yankees 6 at Oakland (day game):
Rickey Henderson stole his 37th and 38th bases in 37 games as the A's outlasted the Yankees, 7-6. The A's took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a throwing error by New York left fielder Dave Winfield and an RBI single by Davey Lopes, and added a run in the second on Jimmy Sexton's single. Lopes, Mike Heath and Wayne Gross rapped RBI singles in the fourth.
Orioles 5, Mariners 4 at Seattle (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Rick Dempsey delivered the game-winning run as the Orioles edged the Mariners, 5-4 in 10 innings. The score was 4-4 when Ken Singleton drew a one-out walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Eddie Murray, who went to third on a single by John Lowenstein. Mike Stanton relieved Gaylord Perry on the hill and yielded a fly by Dempsey to medium right field that brought in Murray.
Rangers 2, Blue Jays 1 at Texas (day game):
George Wright's single drove in the winning run in the 10th inning as the Rangers shaded the Blue Jays, 2-1. With the game tied, 1-1, Leon Roberts opened the bottom of the 10th with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. One out later, he came home on Wright's hit. The Jays had tied the contest in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Dave Revering.
Braves 5, Cardinals 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Scattering seven hits, Rick Mahler pitched the Braves to a 5-2 triumph over the Cardinals. Center fielder Lonnie Smith misjudged Bob Horner's fly ball for a two-run double with two out in the first inning. Chris Chambliss and Rafael Ramirez followed with RBI singles and the final tally of the five-run frame came across on a wild pitch.
Cubs 2, Astros 1 at Houston (day game):
Allowing just three hits over the first seven innings, Doug Bird notched his third straight victory as the Cubs edged the Astros, 2-1. The Cubs scored in the fourth on a single by Keith Moreland, Gary Woods' double, a run-scoring groundout by Ryne Sandberg and an RBI single by Larry Bowa.
Padres 8, Expos 2 at Montreal (day game):
A three-run homer by Garry Templeton keyed a seven-run rally in the ninth inning that lifted the Padres to an 8-2 triumph over the Expos. Templeton's blow followed a single by Alan Wiggins and a walk to Juan Bonilla. The Padres scored four more times in the frame on Sixto Lezcano's single, a two-run double by Luis Salazar and Dave Edwards' single.
Mets 13, Dodgers 4 at New York (day game):
Exploding for nine runs in the sixth inning, the Mets routed the Dodgers, 13-4. The Mets sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth as Bob Bailor drove in three runs with a pair of singles. The Mets had scored twice in the first inning on George Foster's double and a sacrifice fly by Dave Kingman, and twice in the fourth on run-scoring hits by Tom Veryzer and Mike Scott.
Phillies 6, Giants 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
The Phillies extended their winning streak to seven games with a 6-1 decision over the Giants. The Phils broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Pete Rose, and Gary Matthews drilled a solo homer in the sixth.
Reds 3, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Mario Soto fired a seven-hitter and Alex Trevino went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Reds to a 3-1 victory over the Pirates. Trevino had a two-run single in the second and he was aboard via a single in the fifth and tallied on a sacrifice fly by Ron Oester.
