Twins 8, Orioles 7 at Baltimore (night game):
Pounding out 15 hits, the Twins outslugged the Orioles, 8-7, for their first victory over Baltimore since July, 1980. Tom Brunansky snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a three-run homer. Ron Washington capped a three-run second with a two-run triple and added an RBI single in the eighth.
Mariners 3, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
Unfurling a three-hitter in his second shutout of the season, Floyd Bannister pitched the Mariners to a 3-0 triumph over the Red Sox. Only one Boston runner reached second base as the southpaw struck out nine, raising his league-leading total to 58. The Mariners tallied in the first inning on an infield out by Joe Simpson, in the fourth on Bruce Bochte's solo homer and in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Manny Castillo.
White Sox 10, Rangers 2 at Chicago (night game):
LaMarr Hoyt became the majors' first eight-game winner as the White Sox routed the Rangers, 10-2. The Sox took the lead in the fourth inning on Carlton Fisk's two-run single. A two-run double by Greg Luzinski highlighted a four-run fifth and Luzinski also had a two-run single in the seventh.
Indians 6, Blue Jays 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Toby Harrah's homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Indians a 6-5 victory over the Blue Jays. The round-tripper snapped a 5-5 tie and ended the Tribe's four-game losing skein. The Jays had deadlocked the contest in the top of the ninth on Lloyd Moseby's triple and a sacrifice fly by Garth Iorg.
Tigers 11, A's 9 at Detroit (night game):
Larry Herndon slammed three homers while driving in seven runs to lead the Tigers to an 11-9 victory over the A's. Herndon, who homered in his last at-bat May 16, hit a three-run homer in the first inning and two-run shots in the third and fifth. Thus he tied the major league record of four homers in consecutive plate appearances. Jeff Burroughs blasted a grand slam for Oakland in the seventh inning to climax a six-run outburst that tied the game at 9-9. Lance Parrish broke the tie with a single in the bottom of the frame and Alan Trammell also got a run-scoring single.
Yankees 6, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Ken Griffey rapped three singles, stole two bases, scred two runs and knocked in another to spark the Yankees to a 6-2 decision over the Royals. Ron Guidry, going seven innings, received credit for his sixth victory of the year. The Yanks tallied three times in their first turn at bat on Dave Winfield's single and a two-run double by Bobby Murcer.
Angels 4, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Retiring the last 22 batters, Steve Renko pitched a three-hitter to lead the Angels to a 4-1 triumph over the Brewers, California's fifth straight victory. The Angels scored in the first inning on a single by Don Baylor and in the second on Brian Downing's single. Bobby Grich cracked a two-run homer in the eighth.
Dodgers 2, Cubs 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Pedro Guerrero led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a homer to lift the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. The Cubs had tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Larry Bowa.
Braves 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Bob Horner and Chris Chambliss hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning to rally the Braves to a 6-4 triumph over the Expos. The Braves added three runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Dale Murphy, throwing error by Montreal left fielder Terry Francona and a sacrifice fly by Chambliss.
Mets 7, Reds 4 at New York (night game):
Gary Rajsich slammed his first big league homer with two mates aboard to climax a four-run fifth inning, and Hubie Brooks and Ron Hodges accounted for three runs with two-out doubles in the fourth to power the Mets to a 7-4 triumph over the Reds. Neil Allen registered his 10th save.
Astros 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A single by Alan Ashby drove home the winning run as the Astros shaded the Phillies, 2-1 in 12 innings. Ray Knight began the 12th with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Scott Loucks, who went to third on Joe Pittman's one-out grounder. After Phil Garner was walked intentionally, Ashby singled to center.
Cardinals 2, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Going the distance for the first time this season, Bob Forsch pitched the Cardinals to a 2-0 whitewashing of the Padres with his first shutout since 1979. Gene Tenace led off the seventh inning with a homer, and later in that frame the Redbirds picked up an insurance marker on Forsch's run-scoring single.
Giants 2, Pirates 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Bill Laskey pitched a four-hitter and rookie batterymate Bob Brenly had three hits and scored both runs as the Giants recorded a 2-1 triumph over the Pirates. Brenly singled and scored on a single by Guy Sularz in the fourth inning, and he walked and scored in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Duane Kuiper.
