Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, A's 7 at Boston (night game):
Collecting 18 hits, including homers by Jim Rice, Dwight Evans and Carl Yastrzemski, the Red Sox overpowered the A's, 8-7. Yaz had a two-run blast in the third inning and singles in the fifth and seventh to raise his average to .343. The Sox took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth on a single by Rich Gedman, triple by Glenn Hoffman and tie-breaking single by Jerry Remy.

White Sox 3, Indians 2 at Chicago (night game):
In a game shortened by rain, the White Sox posted their fifth straight victory, 3-2 over the Indians. The game was tied, 2-2, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Harold Baines drew a one-out walk and went to second on a wild pitch. After Jim Morrison flied out, Bill Almon drilled a double that scored Baines. Umpires then halted play and called the game an hour and 47 minutes later.

Angels 9, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
The Angels stopped Detroit's eight-game winning streak by outslugging the Tigers, 9-7. Don Baylor doubled home two first-inning runs and Tim Foli singled home two more in the fifth. Bobby Grich and Bob Boone each had two-run homers -- in the third and fourth innings, respectively.

Royals 3, Rangers 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Dennis Leonard and Dan Quisenberry combined on a four-hitter to give the Royals a 3-0 victory over the Rangers. Leonard allowed only two hits before being forced to leave the game in the seventh inning after being struck on his pitching hand by a line drive off the bat of Buddy Bell. X-rays revealed two broken fingers, and Leonard was expected to be out six to eight weeks. The Royals scored in the first frame on a double by Amos Otis and in the second on a single by Willie Wilson. Otis delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Brewers 4, Mariners 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Robin Yount drove in two runs with a pair of singles and Ted Simmons lined a two-run double to pace the Brewers to a 4-1 decision over the Mariners. Mlwaukee scored three runs in the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie as Yount delivered an RBI single and Simmons followed with his two-bagger.

Yankees 12, Twins 1 at New York (night game):
Blasting off with three runs in their first turn at bat, the Yankees went on to crush the Twins, 12-1. Lou Piniella tripled home two runs in the first inning and the third tally registered on first baseman Jesus Vega's throwing error. Bobby Murcer's three-run pinch homer capped a six-run sixth, and Mike Patterson hit his first major league homer with the bases empty in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 0 at Toronto (night game):
Mike Flanagan, Tim Stoddard and Tippy Martinez combined to hurl the Orioles to a 3-0 blanking of the Blue Jays. The Birds took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Rich Dauer. John Lowenstein drilled a solo homer in the third and delivered a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Braves 7, Phillies 6 at Atlanta (night game):
Overcoming a 5-0 deficit, the Braves edged the Phillies, 7-6, as the winning run came in on an error by Phils third baseman Mike Schmidt. The Braves trailed, 6-5, when Claudell Washington singled to open the bottom of the seventh inning, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Chris Chambliss. A single by Dale Murphy and two-out walk to Ken Smith loaded the bases. Bruce Benedict then hit a routine grounder to third that Schmidt mishandled.

Expos 2, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Charlie Lea and Woodie Fryman combined on a two-hitter, leading the Expos to a 2-0 blanking of the Reds. Fryman came on to record the save after Lea yielded a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning. The only other hit off him was a one-out single by Dan Driessen in the sixth. Montreal scored in its first turn at bat on a double by Tim Raines, sacrifice by Terry Francona and sacrifice fly by Andre Dawson.

Astros 5, Mets 1 at Houston (night game):
Extending their winning skein to four games, the Astros downed the Mets, 5-1, as Don Sutton became the first N.L. pitcher to be credited with seven victories. Houston broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning on a double by Terry Puhl and an RBI single by Tony Scott. Alan Ashby delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Ray Knight had his hitting streak halted at 16 games.

Cardinals 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Ken Oberkfell, who had driven home two runners in the fourth inning, stroked a run-scoring single to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth and lead the Cardinals to a 6-3 triumph over the Dodgers. Glenn Brummer followed Oberkfell with a two-run single.

Padres 7, Pirates 5 at San Diego (night game):
Garry Templeton collected a single, double and triple, drove in one run and scored another to help the Padres outlast the Pirates, 7-5. San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Ruppert Jones and added single markers in the fourth and fifth frames on run-scoring singles by Broderick Perkins and Jones.

Cubs 6, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the seventh inning, the Cubs defeated the Giants, 6-4. The Cubs were behind, 3-1, when Bill Buckner began the seventh with a double and went to third on a single by Keith Moreland. After Leon Durham walked to load the bases, a single by Jody Davis scored Buckner. Larry Bowa fouled out but Ryne Sandberg kept the rally alive with a single that scored Moreland. Gary Woods then drilled a two-run pinch-double and the final tally of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Junior Kennedy.
