Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 3, Royals 1 at Chicago (night game):
LaMarr Hoyt stretched his winning streak to 14 games over two seasons by pitching the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Royals. The A.L. record for consecutive wins over two seasons is 17, held by Johnny Allen of Cleveland and Dave McNally of Baltimore. The major league record is 24, set by Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants in 1936-37. The Pale Hose scored all their runs in the sixth inning. They loaded the bases on singles by Bill Almon and Tony Bernazard and a walk to Steve Kemp. Greg Luzinski delivered the first tally with a single and Tom Paciorek followed with a two-run single.

Indians 9, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A three-run homer by Andre Thornton in the first inning triggered the Indians to a 9-2 victory over the Twins. Thornton's blast came with one out after a single by Miguel Dilone and a walk to Mike Hargrove. The Tribe added three more runs in the second on a solo homer by Rick Manning and RBI doubles by Dilone and Toby Harrah.

Orioles 7, Blue Jays 5 at Toronto (day game):
Gary Roenicke went 3-for-4, including a homer and two RBIs, to lead the Orioles to a 7-5 decision over the Blue Jays. Roenicke's round-tripper came in the opening frame and the Birds tallied four times in the second on a triple by Cal Ripken, sacrifice squeeze bunt by Bob Bonner, single by Al Bumbry and single by Roenicke.

Mets 5, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A two-run homer by Ellis Valentine spurred the Mets to a 5-3 decision over the Braves as Neil Allen, pitching out of an eighth-inning jam, notched his 11th save. Valentine's round-tripper came in the fourth inning following a walk to George Foster. The Mets added three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Dave Kingman and Hubie Brooks and an RBI double by Ron Gardenhire.

Phillies 9, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Pounding Tom Seaver for seven runs in five innings, the Phillies sent the Reds to their sixth straight defeat, 9-1. The Phils scored three times in the second inning on a run-scoring grounder by Manny Trillo and RBI singles by Ivan DeJesus and Bob Dernier, and added two tallies in the third on an RBI double by Mike Schmidt and an RBI infield out by Bo Diaz. Diaz also clouted a two-run homer in the fifth.

Expos 2, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Bill Gullickson and Woodie Fryman combined to pitch the Expos to a 2-0 blanking of the Astros. Terry Francona cracked a two-out double in the sixth inning and scored when first baseman Denny Walling made an errant throw to pitcher Bob Knepper at first base on Andre Dawson's grounder. Dawson reached second on the play and came in on a single by Al Oliver.

Pirates 9, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Exploding for six runs in the seventh inning, the Pirates triumphed over the Dodgers, 9-3. With two out in the seventh Don Robinson and Omar Moreno singled, with a double by Lee Lacy scoring both runners to break a 2-2 tie. A single by Bill Madlock played Lacy and, after Jason Thompson walked, pinch-hitter Bill Robinson delivered an RBI single. Johnny Ray then walked and Tony Pena climaxed the outburst with a two-run single. Thompson closed out the scoring in the ninth with a solo homer.

Padres 8, Cubs 2 at San Diego (night game):
Tim Lollar, pitching the first seven innings, upped his record to 5-0 as the Padres downed the Cubs, 8-2.
