Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 4, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Four-hit pitching by Frank Tanana carried the Rangers to a 4-1 triumph over the Orioles. Texas scored twice in the second inning. Johnny Grubb drew a one-out walk, advanced on a single by Dave Hostetler and came home when center fielder Gary Roenicke bobbled a single by Larry Parrish. A two-out single by Mark Wagner plated Hostetler. Hostetler cracked a leadoff homer in the fourth and Grubb stroked an RBI single in the fifth.

Tigers 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Kirk Gibson's two-run homer highlighted a three-run eighth-inning rally that carried the Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Angels. The Tigers trailed, 3-2, when Enos Cabell opened the eighth with a single and Gibson followed with his round-tripper. Mike Ivie then doubled and scored on a single by Larry Herndon.

Indians 4, Twins 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Extending their winning streak to 10 games, the Indians downed the Twins, 4-2, dealing Minnesota its club-record 14th straight defeat. The Tribe scored three runs in the first inning on a single by Toby Harrah and two-run homer by Andre Thornton, his fourth circuit swat in the last four games. Von Hayes cracked an RBI double in the third.

Royals 7, White Sox 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Pushing across a run in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Royals edged the White Sox, 7-6, Chicago's sixth straight loss. The score was 6-6 with one out in the 11th when John Wathan, George Brett and Amos Otis stroked consecutive singles to end the game. The White Sox had achieved a 5-5 tie in the ninth on an RBI pinch-single by Jerry Hairston. A run-scoring single by Greg Luzinski gave the Sox a 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th, but K.C. came back in the bottom of the frame to score on a walk to Otis and a triple by Frank White.

A's 5, Red Sox 0 at Oakland (night game):
Mike Norris unfurled a four-hitter as the A's blanked the Red Sox, 5-0. Dwayne Murphy smacked a two-run homer in the first inning and Dave McKay blasted a two-run circuit shot in the second. The final Oakland run came in the fourth when McKay singled and came around on a single by Jeff Newman and an error by Jim Rice.

Brewers 5, Mariners 2 at Seattle (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Mike Caldwell twirled the Brewers to a 5-2 decision over the Mariners to give Harvey Kuenn a triumph in his debut as Milwaukee manager. Kuenn had been named interim skipper earlier in the day, replacing Buck Rodgers, who was fired. A run-scoring groundout by Ben Oglivie gave Milwaukee a run in the second inning and an error helped the Brewers to their third-inning tally. Cecil Cooper stroked an RBI single in the sixth and hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Yankees 12, Blue Jays 6 at Toronto (night game):
A grand slam by Bobby Murcer climaxed a six-run 13th inning that lifted the Yankees to a 12-6 victory over the Blue Jays. The Yanks loaded the bases with none out in the 13th before Andre Robertson walked to force home the go-ahead run. A single by Dave Collins delivered another and Murcer followed with his homer. New York had tied the contest at 4-4 in the ninth on a single by Lou Piniella and Butch Wynegar's RBI double, and each team tallied twice in the 11th inning.

Padres 3, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Juan Eichelberger gave up just one hit -- a single by Scot Thompson in the second inning -- in twirling the Padres to a 3-1 decision over the Cubs. The Padres got three runs in the sixth when Chicago center fielder Leon Durham dropped a fly ball with the bases loaded and two out. The Cubs tallied in the bottom of that frame when San Diego left fielder Gene Richards dropped Dan Briggs' fly for a three-base error before Bump Wills delivered a sacrifice fly.

Astros 6, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Alan Ashby drove in five runs with a two-run double and three-run homer to power the Astros to a 6-4 triumph over the Expos. Ashby delivered the two-bagger in the second inning after a walk to Jose Cruz and single by Tony Scott, and clouted his round-tripper in the sixth after singles by Cruz and Scott.

Braves 3, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
After pitching no-hit ball for seven innings, Phil Niekro settled for a four-hitter over 8 2/3 innings as the Braves defeated the Mets, 3-1. The first hit off the veteran righthander was a leadoff single by Bob Bailor in the eighth. Niekro left the game in the ninth with the bases loaded and two out and Steve Bedrosian came on to strike out Wally Backman to end the game. The Braves got all their runs in the third inning when Mets left fielder George Foster dropped a two-out liner by Dale Murphy for one run and Bob Watson followed with a two-run homer.

Phillies 4, Reds 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
A double by Pete Rose in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and sparked the Phillies to a 4-2 decision over the Reds. Bob Dernier drew a two-out walk in the fifth, took second on a balk and came in on Rose's two-bagger. Gary Matthews followed with a single that plated Rose. The Phils' final run came in the sixth on a solo homer by Garry Maddox. Dick Ruthven got credit for his fifth straight victory.

Pirates 8, Dodgers 7 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run single by Tony Pena with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Pirates to an 8-7 triumph over the Dodgers. The Bucs trailed, 7-6, when Mike Easler and pinch-hitter Willie Stargell drew consecutive one-out walks. A pinch-single by Willie Montanez then loaded the bases and, after Steve Nicosia struck out, Pena cracked the game-winning hit.

Cardinals 1, Giants 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Joaquin Andujar unfurled his third shutout of the season and second straight against San Francisco as the Cardinals edged the Giants, 1-0. The game's only run came in the third inning when Ozzie Smith walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came in on a two-out single by Keith Hernandez.
