Red Sox 11, Angels 4 at California (night game):
A three-run homer by Carney Lansford keyed a seven-run 11th inning as the Red Sox topped the Angels, 11-4. Lansford's blast came with one out and the Sox tallied four more runs in the frame with a bases-loaded triple by Jerry Remy capping the outburst. Boston had tied the contest in the ninth on a two-run single by Carl Yastrzemski.

Mariners 4, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Unfurling a brilliant two-hitter, Jim Beattie pitched the Mariners to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Tigers. Todd Cruz put Seattle ahead with a solo homer in the fifth inning and Al Cowens followed a two-out walk to Richie Zisk in the eighth with a circuit swat. Bruce Bochte delivered the final run with a single in the ninth.

Twins 6, Orioles 0 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins snapped their 14-game losing streak with a 6-0 triumph over the Orioles. Minnesota broke a 0-0 deadlock with a four-run uprising in the fourth inning as Ron Washington smacked a leadoff homer, Tom Brunansky walked, Jesus Vega rapped an RBI double and Gary Ward belted a two-run round-tripper.

Royals 4, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
Zooming off the launching pad with three runs in their first turn at bat, the Royals went on to shade the Yankees, 4-3. In the opening frame, John Wathan walked, stole second and scored on a single by Amos Otis. Hal McRae followed with a line drive to center than eluded Dave Collins for a two-run inside-the-park homer. Frank White delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the Royals' final tally. Dan Quisenberry, although giving up a solo homer to John Mayberry with two out in the ninth, picked up his 14th save.

Brewers 10, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Scoring nine runs in the first two innings, the Brewers enjoyed a 10-1 rout of the A's. Milwaukee got four runs in the first frame on an error by Oakland shortstop Tony Phillips and a three-run homer by Gorman Thomas. A three-run double by Ted Simmons highlighted a five-run second.

Rangers 4, White Sox 3 at Texas (night game):
Randy Bass went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox, Chicago's seventh straight loss. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Bass and a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Johnny Grubb. They added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Buddy Bell and Bass. The Sox picked up three runs in the ninth, two coming on a homer by Tom Paciorek, but the rally fell short as Paul Mirabella came on to gain the save.

Indians 6, Blue Jays 3 at Toronto (night game):
The Indians continued on the warpath, winning their 11th straight game, 6-3 over the Blue Jays. The Tribe broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning when Ron Hassey drilled a one-out double, took third on a single by Rick Manning and came home on a single by Jack Perconte. One out later, Miguel Dilone rapped a triple to bring in Manning and Perconte.

Giants 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run homer by Chili Davis in the first inning triggered the Giants to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Davis' blast came with one out and Joe Morgan on base after being hit by a pitch. The Giants scored two runs in the third inning on a two-out walk to Jack Clark, RBI double by Milt May and run-scoring single by Tom O'Malley.

Reds 8, Mets 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Collecting 17 hits, the Reds pounded the Mets, 8-3. Cincinnati broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Ron Oester and salted the game away with a four-run outburst in the sixth on consecutive singles by Tom Seaver, Eddie Milner, Oester, Dave Concepcion, Dan Driessen and Mike Vail. George Foster, in his first appearance in Cincinnati after being traded to New York, homered with a man on base in the first inning.

Astros 8, Phillies 3 at Houston (night game):
Exploding for five runs in the eighth inning, the Astros downed the Phillies, 8-3, as Ray Knight led Houston with four RBIs. With the game tied, 3-3, the Astros loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth before Knight delivered a two-run single. Jose Cruz then climaxed the rally with a three-run homer.

Padres 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Driving in three runs with a homer and double, Terry Kennedy paced the Padres to a 5-4 decision over the Pirates. Kennedy's round-tripper came in the fourth inning with a mate aboard and his two-bagger capped a three-run rally in the fifth.

Cardinals 5, Dodgers 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Four-hit twirling carried Bob Forsch to his 100th career victory and led the Cardinals to a 5-2 triumph over the Dodgers. The Redbirds scored in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by George Hendrick and went ahead to stay in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Lonnie Smith and an RBI single by Hendrick.
