Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Homers by Jim Rice and Rich Gedman sparked a seven-run sixth inning that powered the Red Sox to a 7-2 victory over the Angels, California's sixth straight defeat. Rice opened the big inning with his circuit clout and Gedman delivered a three-run round-tripper with one out. The final runs of the outburst came when Jerry Remy bounced into a run-scoring forceout and Carl Yastrzemski drilled a two-run single.

Orioles 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Mike Flanagan spaced seven hits in twirling the Orioles to a 3-1 decision over the Twins. The Birds scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Murray. John Lowenstein cracked a solo homer in the fourth and the final run came in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Dan Ford.

Brewers 11, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
Robin Yount, Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie crashed successive seventh-inning homers to highlight a 17-hit attack that carried the Brewers to an 11-3 pasting of the A's. Milwaukee took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Ted Simmons and RBI single by Charlie Moore. After their seventh-inning barrage, the Brewers picked up a run in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Jim Gantner, and three more in the ninth when Oglivie singled and Simmons and Gorman Thomas followed with consecutive homers.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
A two-run homer by Harold Baines enabled the White Sox to snap their seven-game losing streak with a 2-1 triumph over the Rangers. Baines connected in the seventh inning after Carlton Fisk drew a two-out walk. Salome Barojas, in relief of Britt Burns, earned his 12th save by coming on in the bottom of the frame and choking off a Texas rally. Both teams had numerous threats early, only to have double plays kill them. In a bizarre fourth inning, the Sox failed to score though they had two hits, two stolen bases and the Rangers committed two errors.

Braves 2, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Atlanta trailed, 1-0, with one out in the seventh inning when Dale Murphy singled and Bob Horner walked. A double by Chris Chambliss scored Murphy and moved Horner to third. After Jerry Royster ran for Horner and Glenn Hubbard was walked intentionally to load the bases, pinch-hitter Keith Smith struck out. But Biff Pocoroba, batting for Rick Mahler, then drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to deliver Royster and give the Braves a 2-1 victory over the Expos.

Giants 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
A homer by Rich Gale -- his first major league round-tripper -- enabled the Giants to edge the Cubs, 2-1, and deal Chicago its sixth straight loss. Gale's blast came with two out in the second inning and Tom O'Malley on second base with a leadoff double.

Reds 6, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Scattering seven hits, Mario Soto pitched the Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Mets. The righthander struck out eight to raise his major league-leading total to 102. The Reds scored three runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Dave Concepcion and two-run homer by Dan Driessen, and added two tallies in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Ron Oester and sacrifice fly by Driessen.

Phillies 5, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A two-run rally in the eighth inning carried the Phillies to a 5-3 victory over the Astros. The game was tied, 3-3, when Garry Maddox opened the eighth with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Manny Trillo and scored on a single by Ivan DeJesus. DeJesus then stole second and scored on a single by Sparky Lyle.

Dodgers 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A three-run double by Bill Russell capped a four-run sixth inning that carried the Dodgers to a 6-2 triumph over the Cardinals and made Fernando Valenzuela the N.L.'s first eight-game winner. The game was deadlocked, 2-2, before the Dodgers went ahead, 3-2, in the sixth on consecutive singles by Steve Garvey, Dusty Baker and Pedro Guerrero. After two outs, Mike Scioscia was walked intentionally to load the bases before Russell cleared the sacks with his two-bagger.
