Brewers 10, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Robin Yount hit two homers and a triple to lead the Brewers to a 10-2 triumph over the Orioles for the A.L. East championship. Yount drilled solo shots in the first and third innings. Cecil Cooper smacked a leadoff round-tripper in the sixth and Ted Simmons climaxed a five-run outburst in the ninth with a two-run circuit clout. Yount led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a single by Ben Oglivie. Don Sutton went the first eight innings to get the victory. The game was Earl Weaver's last as the Baltimore manager

Angels 7, Rangers 6 at California (night game):
A homer by Gary Pettis in the ninth inning enabled the Angels to edge the Rangers, 7-6. The score was 6-6 when Pettis connected for his first major league round-tripper with one out.

Tigers 9, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Alan Trammell drove in three runs with a homer and single and John Wockenfuss hit a two-run pinch homer to power the Tigers to a 9-1 thumping of the Indians. Trammell's circuit shot came with a mate aboard and capped a three-run fourth inning. The first tally of that frame came on a groundout by Tom Brookens. Wockenfuss' blast highlighted a three-run eighth.

A's 6, Royals 3 at Kansas City (day game):
Dave McKay and Joe Rudi slammed two-run homers to carry the A's to a 6-3 decision over the Royals. McKay hit for the circuit in the second inning and Rudi snapped a 3-3 tie with a four-ply wallop in the fourth.

White Sox 6, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Scattering seven hits, LaMarr Hoyt notched his 19th victory as the White Sox prevailed over the Twins, 6-1. Tom Paciorek triggered a three-run fourth inning with a solo homer and Marc Hill singled home two more runs in the same frame. Harold Baines cracked a leadoff round-tripper in the eighth.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Mike Brown, working the final four innings, notched his first major league victory as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 5-3, in 11 innings. The Sox broke a 3-3 deadlock in the top of the 11th on a two-out run-scoring single by Rick Miller and an RBI double by Dave Stapleton.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 2 at Toronto (day game):
A two-run triple by Willie Upshaw and five-hit hurling by Jim Clancy paced the Blue Jays to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners. Upshaw broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with his three-bagger and subsequently scored on an error by Seattle third baseman Manny Castillo.
